Sonata in D Minor for Clarinet and Piano (2016) is written by contemporary composer Michele Mangani (b. 1966). A clarinetist himself, Mangani has written extensively for the clarinet, bringing out the instrument’s lyricism, virtuosity and rich palette of tonal colors. This is Orion’s first performance of this work.
Trio in D Minor for Violin, Cello and Piano, Opus 32 by Anton Arensky (1861-1906), an Orion favorite, is an ultra-Romantic piece that exudes melody, pathos, brilliant technique and beautiful sound combinations. The final movement pulls ideas from the lyrical first movement, the playful second and the
elegiac third.
