Sarai Buchanan has performed around the world as a soloist and collaborative artist. She has appeared at numerous international music festivals, including the International Music Academies in Cremona, Italy and Regensburg, Germany; the Orfeo Music Festival in Vipiteno, Italy; and the American Fine Arts Festival in the Republic of Georgia. In 2016 she formed Duo Raíz with Mexican-born guitarist Andrea Salcedo, and held their debut recital at Pianoforte Salon in Chicago. Sarai performs in various New York City venues, including Merkin Hall and Shephard Recital Hall at the City College of New York.
Sarai holds a graduate degree from CUNY – The City College of New York. Before moving to New York, Sarai pursued her undergraduate degree in her native city at the Chicago College of Performing Arts. Her principal teachers include Genya Paley, Alison Deane, and Sladjana Jovanovik. She is currently on the piano faculties at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music and Music Conservatory of Westchester.
Enthusiasm, determination and perseverance are a few of the words that describe the fruitful career of this young artist. Her alma mater from 2005 to 2020, Universidad de Guanajuato, allowed her to get her Bachelor’s degree in music, where she also got the “Reconocimiento al mérito Universitario” (Acknowledgment of university merit) for six continuous years, a semester at the “Accademia delle Arti” in Italy; her Master’s degree in arts which she finished with lauded recognition and thanks to the support of the CONACYT (National Committee for the Culture and the Arts) and her PhD in arts. All of which helped her obtain the knowledge and skills necessary for singing.
Working with distinguish teachers such as Hugo Barreiro Lastra, Edith Contreras, Dana Quifu, Hyo Son Lee and James Demster, is how she discovered her passion for music and an emotional sensitivity that allows her to make wonderful interpretations that can impress everyone who listens to her. This talent has brought her to perform on several national and international stages, in music festivals like “Internationale Domkonzert” in Germany, “Pollino Music Festival” in Italy and “Festival Internacional Cervantino” 2015 y 2019 in Guanajuato, México.
In 2021 she was part of the national program “Raíz México” which helped restart the cultural activities in the country during the Coronavirus pandemic. In October of the same year, she performed a concert in the city of Atlanta, accompanied by musicians of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, as part of the Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations. She also performed in the city of Dallas, TX.
In spite of the difficulties originated by the current pandemic, Sindy Gutiérrez remains active and present with her music, making and transmitting concerts through different digital platforms, alongside of the string quartet Paax K’ayy, with whom she has developed a new approach to Mexican music that is promisingly and strongly consolidating itself and together they will release their first album in 2022.
