SUMMARY:Markus Rutz & Third Coast Sounds
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month in the City of Chicago\, Markus Rutz & Third Coast Sounds presents a concert of originals and more widely known works centering on our city and music history. \nMarkus Rutz plays trumpet with a bluesy style and tine that has been called gorgeous. The last few years have been years of achievement in mid-career activities of performances and recording with local and national honors. \nIn autumn of 2019\, the album Blueprints Figure One: Frameworks was released which had tracks that appears on a story from NPR’s Morning Edition. The album was in consideration for a Grammy nomination last year. Also in January 2020 an album release concert was played for a New York City performance debut. The second volume of music from the project was released in September 2020 as Blueprints Figure Two: New Designs. Album recognition and reviews were accompanied by several radio interviews and global radio features notably in France and Germany. \nA album live was released in December 2021 and features an exciting in-person performance side of Markus with a quintet. \nThe most recent release is Storybook was recorded at pianoforte in Chicago. The work is a concept album that is a postcard from the musician as a personal contribution to the larger story we are all in at this point in time. \nMarkus performs\, composes and teaches music from his home base in Chicago\, Illinois. \n  \nMarkus Rutz – trumpet \nAdrian Ruiz – piano \nJoshua Ramos – bass \nCharles Heath – drums \n  \nThe performance is presented with support from the Chicago Federation of Musicians (10-208) and American Federation of Musicians.

SUMMARY:Lakeshore Rush
DESCRIPTION:Repertoire includes works by Anton Arensky\, Kenji Bunch\, Louise Farrenc\, Amos Gillespie\, Astor Piazzolla\, and Carl Maria von Weber. \n  \nBiography: \nFounded in 2014\, Lakeshore Rush is a Chicago-based chamber music ensemble. A flexible ensemble\, Lakeshore Rush consists of flute\, clarinet\, saxophone\, violin\, cello\, and piano. We frequently perform together as a sextet\, but also provide timbre and style variation with smaller groups gleaned from our instrumentation. \nLakeshore Rush maintains a strong presence within its home city of Chicago and abroad\, performing at high-profile and smaller venues equally\, including the Chicago Symphony Center\, Chicago Cultural Center\, the PianoForte Studios\, Fulton Street Collective\, and the Thirsty Ears Festival. They have commissioned and premiered many works by up-and-coming and established American composers\, including works by Grace Baugher\, Seth Boustead\, Beth Bradfish\, Griffin Candey\, Amos Gillespie\, Jonathan Hannau\, Joshua Hintze\, Pierre Jalbert\, Kyong Mee Choi\, Marc Mellits\, Logan Rutledge\, Laura Schwendinger\, and Roger Zare. In 2020\, the ensemble premiered its first feature-length film score written by composer Seth Boustead\, with the release of Chicago Film Project’s Dreaming Grand Avenue. \nAs community members\, Lakeshore Rush collaborated with the Chicago Composers’ Consortium\, is an active member of New Music Chicago\, and maintains an ongoing relationship with the Merit School of Music. The ensemble has presented workshops\, masterclasses\, and residencies at Lawrence University in Wisconsin\, the University of Illinois at Chicago\, and the Avaloch Farm Music Institute. Live recordings of the ensemble’s performances have been heard on WFMT and Blue Lake Radio.

SUMMARY:20th Anniversary Celebration Concert
DESCRIPTION:May 2\, 2024 will mark the 20th Anniversary of the grand opening of PianoForte’s showroom and organization. Although initially PianoForte Chicago\, Inc. was founded as a piano store\, PianoForte Foundation NFP\, a 501c3 non-profit organization was being formed in parallel. The overarching mission has always been to be a center for piano and pianists and to foster a love for piano culture\, piano literature\, across all genres and types of performances. \nOver the years\, PianoForte has presented hundreds of live concerts\, live radio broadcasts\, live streams over YouTube and Facebook of classical\, jazz and any contemporary forms of piano or piano including compositions. \nWe have also organized piano festivals (among them the Schubertiade)\, competitions\, master classes\, forums and amateur MeetUps\, and hosted symposiums and seminars. \nWe have provided scholarships to students for free piano lessons\, when they couldn’t afford them. \nWe have donated dozens of grand and upright pianos as well as digital pianos to schools\, Chicago Public Schools and others\, community centers and churches. \nOn May 2\, 2004\, our grand opening included the visit of Mr. Paolo Fazioli\, maker of Fazioli pianos\, the only maker that PianoForte represented at that time. Mr. Fazioli was featured on Chicago Tonight (WTTW TV)\, on WFMT 98.7 FM and in the press. \nIn order to celebrate our 20th Anniversary\, PianoForte will hold an open door\, free program of performances provided by pianists and musicians who have been closely involved with PianoForte over the last 20 years. This genre-defying approach is one of the reasons why his iconic Rhapsody in Blue is such a unifier\, connecting to people of all backgrounds since its premiere on February 12\, 1924! As an artist\, my mission is indeed to seek ways to unify – to create points of connections\, both among compositional styles and among my listeners. And so\, what is the point of connection among an Argentine\, an Afro-Englishman\, a Cuban-American\, an Armenian\, and the son of Jewish immigrants from Odessa? All five composers reached to go beyond the Western Classical forms and techniques toward something much more ancient\, a Paul Gauguinesque desire to embrace primal folk elements. This creates a remarkably cohesive theme among the five of them\, with various “cross-pollinations” and commonalities. Both Ginastera and Babajanian embraced their respective folk traditions\, while also exploring modernist 20th century elements such as the 12-tone serialist techniques. Both Coleridge-Taylor and Tania León were spurred to return to their roots\, embracing rhythmic and melodic elements that could be traced back to African songs and dances. And of course\, the overarching theme of Jazz\, with spicy dissonant sonorities and Afro-Cuban driving rhythms unify all five composers. Alberto Ginastera (1916-1983)\, born in Buenos Aires to a Spanish father and an Italian mother\, was prolific in all major genres including opera\, ballet\, symphonic and smaller-scale ensemble works\, and even film music. Samuel Coleridge- Taylor (1875-1912) was born in London\, and had the most remarkable journey as a composer\, fully finding his musical identity only after visiting the United States. My friend\, the renowned WQXR host Terrance McKnight remarked “this music sounds like being in Love. Here is a composer who has given himself permission to love himself and be at peace with who he is.” Tania León\, born in 1943\, in Havana\, Cuba\, is undoubtedly one of the most impactful composers and musical figures of our time. Her astonishing achievements include Kennedy Center Honors\, a Pulitzer Prize\, and a Guggenheim Fellowship. Her father deeply inspired her compositional journey\, by asking her one day after\, hearing a recent early work\, “Where are you in your music?” This question urged her to embrace her roots and proudly incorporate rhythmic and motivic elements of Cuban music. Arno Babajanian (1921-1983) was born in Yerevan\, Armenia\, and showcased such prodigious talent at the age of 5 as to receive the encouragement and the blessings of Aram Khachaturian himself. Babajanian’s writing is centered around Armenian folk music\, however similarly to Ginastera\, he easily navigated many different styles\, ranging from pop to serialism\, as seen in the five selections on the program. \n– Kariné Poghosyan \n  \nThis concert is made possible by AGBU Chicago. \n  \nBiography: \n“There is such a sense of joy\, even ecstasy as she plays.” This is how NY1’s Stephanie Simon describes concert pianist Kariné Poghosyan’s performances. Ms. Poghosyan’s most recent concerts include several sold-out recitals at Carnegie Hall. Her “Rachmaninoff and Stravinsky” CD was praised by the Gramophone for its “masterly textural layering and resounding climaxes\,” and the American Record Guide stated that “a more heroic program would be hard to find\, and few could play as well as the Armenian- American Poghosyan.” Ms. Poghosyan was featured in WQXR’s “Chopin Marathon” live webcast\, and David Osenberg’s award-winning program on WWFM\, Cadenza. During the pandemic\, she performed 100 weekly virtual concerts\, gathering a loyal world-wide following and press coverage from the Pianist Magazine\, Katie Couric’s newsletter The Wake-up Call\, and ABC’s Rick Rowe. In February 2023\, Ms. Poghosyan released her third album Folk Themes on Parma Recordings\, available now on Amazon\, AppleMusic\, Spotify\, etc. This past season\, she performed solo recitals at Ehrbar Saal in Vienna and the Soraya Performing Arts Center in Northridge\, California\, as well as concerti performances with the Wallingford Symphony and Evanston Symphony Orchestras. This season\, Ms.Poghosyan has made her solo recital debuts in Milan\, Italy with a CD Release concert\, and the iconic Sheldon Concert Hall in Saint Louis\, presented by the Saint Louis University as part of their All-Steinway initiative. Ms. Poghosyan curates and performs her own monthly Lecture-Recital broadcasts on Patreon for a global audience of patrons tuning in on Zoom. She refers to these concert series as one of her proudest artistic achievements\, “These inspirational monthly events bring together music-lovers for 3 different experiences – the unique live performances\, a chance to learn more about the music and composers\, but above all\, the feeling of togetherness as they connect with each other in the community. In my own way\, I wanted to create a similar experience to Leonard Bernstein’s Young Peoples’ Concerts\, except mine would be for people of all ages and backgrounds\, tuning in on zoom from all over the world on the last Sunday each month to experience the Joy of live music. My vision is to expand their reach and impact much further\, andcreate PBS-worthy monthly productions for the patrons to experience live from the comfort of their homes. DESCRIPTION:Born in 1977 into a lineage of accomplished musicians in Warsaw\, Michal Drewnowski‘s musical journey began at the age of eight in Italy\, where he resided with his family. The young prodigy honed his piano skills under the expert guidance of his father\, Marek Drewnowski. In 1991\, Michal commenced formal musical education at the esteemed Karol Szymanowski Music School in Warsaw\, studying under the tutelage of Bronislawa Kawalla and Ewa Poblocka. He graduated with the highest honors from the University of Music in Lodz\, further refining his craft at the Conservatory of Music in Geneva\, guided by eminent professors Dominique Merlet and Pascal Devoyon. In 2006\, he achieved his Master’s Degree with distinction. Drewnowski’s musical odyssey has been enriched by immersion in piano masterclasses led by luminaries like Naum Shtarkman\, Milosz Magin\, Fou T’Song\, Rudolf Kehrer\, and Eugen Indjic. Our three young performers — ages 15\, 17\, and 19 — not only won their state competition in Hamburg\, but also were winners in the overall federal competition. \nWe are looking forward to their performances in Chicago and hope that their visit will enrich their professional training during a pivotal point in their careers while supporting the educational and cultural ties that the Hamburg Committee of CSCI has long fostered.

Three works by Americans of different generations demonstrate the power and potential of Dvorak’s idea. \nProgram: \nFlorence Price: Quartet No. 1 in G Major\nAmy Beach: Quartet Op. 89\nJerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate: Pisachi (Reveal)\nAntonín Dvořák: String Quartet No. 13 in G Major Op. 106 \n  \nDescribed by the Chicago Tribune as “an ensemble that invites you — ears\, mind\, and spirit — into its music\,” the Avalon String Quartet has established itself as one of the country’s leading chamber music ensembles. \nThe Avalon has performed in major venues including Carnegie Hall\, Alice Tully Hall\, the 92nd St Y\, Merkin Hall\, and Bargemusic in New York; the Library of Congress and National Gallery of Art in Washington DC; Wigmore Hall in London; and Herculessaal in Munich. Other performances include appearances at the Bath International Music Festival\, Aldeburgh Festival\, Caramoor\, La Jolla Chamber Music Society\, NPR’s St. Paul Sunday\, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum\, Dame Myra Hess Concerts\, Los Angeles Music Guild\, and the Ravinia Festival. The Avalon String Quartet’s debut CD\, Dawn to Dusk\, featuring quartets by Ravel and Janacek\, was honored with the 2002 Chamber Music America/WQXR Record Award for best chamber music recording. The quartet’s live performances and conversations are frequently featured on Chicago fine arts radio station WFMT. They have also been heard on New York’s WQXR and WNYC\, National Public Radio’s Performance Today\, Canada’s CBC\, Australia’s ABC\, the ARD of Germany\, and France Musique. \nThe Avalon captured the top prize at the ARD Competition in Munich (2000) and First Prize at the Concert Artists Guild Competition in New York City (1999). Ballen (including premiere of new works). \n  \nBiographies: \nAs a Steinway Artist\, Haley Myles maintains an international performance schedule. Her appearances to-date include recitals in the United States\, France\, Germany\, Austria\, Portugal\, Italy\, Switzerland\, and the United Kingdom. She has participated extensively in various high-profile international music festivals\, both domestic and foreign. She is also a laureate of seven international competitions and has appeared on radio shows throughout Europe and America. \nHaley holds diplomas and degrees from distinguished institutions including the Mozarteum (Austria)\, Imola Piano Academy (Italy)\, and the Trinity Laban Conservatoire (UK). Previous teachers include Paul Badura-Skdoa and Andrei Gavrilov. She has also had lessons from Cyprien Katsaris\, Enrico Pace\, Olli Mustonen\, Boris Petrushansky\, and László Gyimesi\, amongst others. \nIn addition to performing core repertoire\, Haley regularly collaborates with contemporary composers. She has worked with over 50 composers to-date\, proof playing\, recording\, and performing their works. Her YouTube channel boasts over 100 recordings resulting from these collaborations. \n  \nNick Ballen is an American composer based in Chicago. Born and raised in Washington\, D.C.\, he earned his undergraduate degree in international studies from Middlebury College in Vermont and his J.D. from the University of Illinois College of Law at Champaign-Urbana. A lifelong fan of classical music\, among many other genres and styles\, and an erstwhile student of the piano in his youth\, Nick is largely self-taught as a composer. He began composing as a hobby and creative outlet while not otherwise engaged in his day job as an attorney. \nNick especially enjoys writing in the classical style\, which also happens to be his favorite period for playing and listening alike\, and is heavily inspired by Mozart\, Hadyn\, and Beethoven. \n  \nGrowing up\, John Griffin idolized Beethoven symphonies\, Star Wars movies\, and Disney Cartoons in equal measure. So he went to film school with a minor in music composition hoping that filmmaking would be the path to using all of his talents. Instead\, it led to a lengthy career as a TV Animation Director which didn’t allow much time for music.\nBut that was then…\nIn 2017 John began composing again with intensity and renewed skill. The result has been 4 full piano sonatas\, 2 Violin Sonatas\, a Cello Sonata\, 2 Clarinet Sonatas\, A Flute Sonata\, a String Quartet\, and a set of 5 bagatelles for piano (plus a few misc. works).\nJohn has labelled his musical style as “RetroClassical” – a mix of 19th century musical forms with a cinematic sense of drama.

SUMMARY:Healing A Fractured World: A Portrait of Exiled Composer Egon Lustgarten
DESCRIPTION:Egon Lustgarten (1887-1961)\, an Austrian composer of Jewish descent\, was forced to emigrate to the United States after Hitler’s annexation of Austria. The Chicago premiere of ‘Healing a Fractured World: A portrait of exiled composer Egon Lustgarten’ brings the composer’s story to life through performance of his rarely heard musical works\, narrated personal correspondence\, images and a brief lecture. This program is presented by The Lahr von Leïtis Academy and Archive under the auspice of Elysium Between Two Continents. \nA brief opening lecture will give an overview of Lustagrten’s story and the political circumstances that led to his exile. Musical selections will include works for piano\, Lieder and opera performed by soprano Melissa Primavera\, pianist Sarah Jenks\, baritone Carl Ratner\, and flutist Suzanne Hannau. Interspersed with the musical selections will be narration by actor Fred Wellisch of selected letters to Lustgarten’s loved ones and colleagues as well as his diary entries. These media combined will create a portrait of Lustgarten as an artist\, an emigrant\, and a human. The music will be sung in German with English supertitles and narrated components in English. Images of the composer and places of importance to his story will be displayed as part of the performance. Running time is approximately 90 minutes followed by a brief reception to allow for audience reflection\, dialogue\, and engagement with the performers. \n \n  \n  \nThe mission of The Lahr von Leïtis Academy and Archive is to expose younger generations to exiled art; helping them create a future that incorporates lessons learned from history. DESCRIPTION:Toujours l’amour! \nFrom Piaf to Sinatra and Michel Legrand to his own original songs\, Jean-Claude ORFALI\, pianist\, performs his jazzy and semi-classical arrangements of standards\, French and International music. Join him as he takes you on a musical journey with his various improvisations and variations on the worldʼs most beautiful melodies. Above all\, his aim is to share with his audience the emotional content of his music\, taking particular care to bring out its spiritual beauty and qualities. \nWe are serving this concert as “dessert” to the Cabaret Connexion concert festival\, with the inestimable pianist Jean-Claude ORFALI\, direct from the Cabaret Lapin Agile of Paris and special guest vocalists Christine Steyer\, Claudia Hommel and Angélique Dessaint. Offering inventions and variations on new and favorite French love songs. \n  \nJean-Claude ORFALI pianist\, composer and music director. He comes from a family of musicians. Very early on\, his father Elie ORFALI \, a pianist and composer\, gave him a taste for music and taught him the basics of the profession. At a young age\, he took private piano lessons with Giuseppe PULLI and followed classical training at the conservatory with Herta PAPPO and with the Royal Schools of London. He also took composition and singing lessons and trained in jazz piano and orchestral conducting. \nHe began his career in 1984 with a variety group and then as a solo artist. He exercised his talent on numerous cruises during which he acquired experience in contact with an international audience.\nIn Paris\, and for several years\, we have been able to listen to him regularly in palaces such as: the George V\, the Bristol\, the Plaza-Athénée\, the Crillon\, the Meurice and many others. He appears at the oldest Parisian artistic cabaret Lapin Agile and serves as pianist and instructor for the Chicago Paris Cabaret Connexion. He has participated in many international events and gives a few concerts in several countries around the world.He performs a varied repertoire of world music and jazz standards as well as international songs. \nSince 1997\, he has been the pianist of the Parisian jazz Big Band ” BB15 “; he took over as its director in 2009\, succeeding guitarist and conductor Gérard CURBILLON. With the BB15 he has given various concerts at UNESCO\, the Luxembourg Gardens\, the Champ de Mars\, the Asnières Theatre\, the Parc Floral\, etc. He also plays in a small jazz group and accompanies jazz and French song singers on the piano. \nORFALI has composed and performed for film. He also composes for American\, Canadian and Middle Eastern singers and is collaborating with the American soprano Christine Steyer on a book of cabaret songs. \nHe has accompanied Mexican diva Maria Felix on the piano and has performed in the presence of international show business stars: Celine Dion\, Lionel Richie\, Paul McCartney\, Mariah Carey\, Quincy Jones\, Morgan Freeman\, Mel Gibson\, Isabelle Adjani\, Jean-Michel Jarre\, Line Renaud\, Ron Wood (Rolling Stones)\, Johnny Hallyday and many others.
