Not to worry. With a voice as noticeably (as Terry puts it) “ranks with all of the greats\,” it won’t be long. \nOver the course of a multi-faceted career spanning just a little under 3 decades\, Thimes is no stranger to the music world\, growing up in a home surrounded by all types of music from her father & radio icon\, the late Lou “Fatha” Thimes. \nThimes has performed with such jazz notables as Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra\,(St. Louis\, MO) the late Clark Terry(The Blue Note-NY)\, Dr. Billy Taylor\, Earl May\, Benny Powell\,(Flushing Town Hall) and James Moody(Blue Note-NY). She has also graced the stage with the likes of Houston Person\, Jimmy&Tootie Heath\, Bobby McFerrin\, and Bucky Pizzarelli. \nIn recent years she has appeared and toured Paris with David Sanborn\, sung for the Queen of Thailand(Mandarin Oriental Hotel)\, Queen Elizabeth II(British Embassy-Washington D.C. (during her 2009 visit to the U.S)\, President George W Bush(White House 2007)\, and was hand picked by the Queen of Soul(Aretha Franklin) to perform for her 72nd birthday celebration ( 2015-Ritz Carlton\, NY). \nMost say that her acting is just as great as her singing and founding director Ron Himes of the St Louis Black Repertory would agree. Thimes has received 8 Woodie Awards( named after Freedom Theatre Founder-Woody King-NY) for her roles as lead and supporting for acting\, and musical performances. \nAlthough a native of St Louis\, MO Thimes\, has recently became a resident of Chicago IL\, where she can be seen at Winter’s jazz club downtown Chicago. \nWhen Denise is not performing\, Thimes wears another hat and is equally passionate as Founder & Executive Director of the Mildred Thimes Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research.(named after Thimes mother). Thimes continues to appeal for more education and awareness for this fatal disease that struck her mother in 1997. \nThimes has truly been one of the cherished voices of modern jazz. \nWhether headlining at Dizzy’s Coca Cola Room in New York\, or conquering the national jazz festival scene\, or sharing the stage with the legendary Tony Bennett\, Denise Thimes has an unmistakable tendency to steal the show and astonish crowds of every size and background. II \n  \nSonata (1926) by Bela Bartok (1881-1945) \nAllegro moderato \nSostenuto e pesante \nAllegro molto \n  \nBallade #2 in F major\, op. 38 (1839) by Frederic Chopin (1810-1849) \nAndantino\, Presto con fuoco \n  \nProgram Notes: \nHeitor Villa-Lobos wrote two suites with the title Próle do Bébé. The set presented here is from the first suite which he wrote for his wife. They are full of childlike charm and simplicity and were championed by the pianist Artur Rubinstein. \nJohann Sebastian Bach originally paired the Prelude in G major with a fughetto in his set of Little Preludes and Fugues. However\, he ultimately separated this prelude\, however\, realizing that it was a gem worth standing alone. It is a prelude rich with lyricism and delicate syncopations. All the preludes of the Well-tempered Clavier\, I also feel\, can stand alone and hold their own. The Prelude in F# minor is an eloquently songful air. While the Prelude in G minor contains the dramatic character of an Overture\, the fabric of the Prelude in F major is woven with resplendent choral textures. \nWritten the same year as Piano Concerto No. 1 and Out of Doors Suite for his concert tours\, the Sonata by Bela Bartok exploits the potentialities of percussive pianism\, primal rhythms and peasant-like melodies. The first movement is a dance with a motor driven rhythm. The static harmonies and inert melodies of the second movement depict a stark\, bleak\, desolate landscape. The third movement\, set in a kind of rondovariation form\, has the most ethnic flavor combining folk-like melodies and rhythms with percussive modernism. \nFrederic Chopin’s Ballade #2 in F major tells a tale of tenderness and turmoil. A lovely tranquil theme proceeds only to be interrupted by an eruption of fury. In the eye of the storm that has just precipitated the main theme is developed only to rise to an even more frenzied climax ending with but a wind blown whisper of the opening theme. \n-M.V \n  \nBiography: \nMark Valenti received his Master of Music from Northwestern University\, Bachelor of Music from the Philadelphia Musical Academy and has studied with such notable teachers as Benjamin Whitten\, Zoltan Kocsis and Mary Sauer. In addition to giving solo recitals in cities throughout the U.S.\, Mr. Valenti has performed in France\, Belgium\, Hungary and Luxembourg as well as for former First Lady Barbara Bush in Washington\, D.C. \nMark Valenti has performed in recital live on WFMT classical radio. He has also done extensive work in the Jazz field including performances with Gregory Hines\, Frank Foster and Al Grey and has appeared on television with Joe Sudler’s Swing Machine and singer/actor Christopher Durham. \nFormerly Professor of Music at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia\, Xavier University in Chicago and the Loire Valley Music Institute in France\, Mr. Valenti currently teaches at his studio in the Lakeview neighborhood of Chicago and is available for lessons for all levels and all styles.

DESCRIPTION:“In Memory of Feodor Chaliapin” 150 years since the birth of the great Russian bass 1873 – 2023 \nThe repertoire will feature Chaliapin’s most favorite song cycles and arias: \n“Don Quichotte a Dulcinee” by Maurice Ravel \n“Chansons de Don Quichotte” by Jacques Ibert \nAria Mefistofele by Arrigo Boito \nLa Calunnia from Il Barbiere di Siviglia by Gioachino Rossini \n  \nAndrea Silvestrelli is one of the most sought-after ‘bassi profondi’ on the international opera scene. Garnering critical acclaim for his debut at the Lyric Opera of Chicago in Rigoletto\, the Chicago Sun-Times reported\, “There were wild cheers for Andrea Silvestrelli …who brought a terrifying\, sepulchral\,tone to the assassin Sparafucile.” The Chicago Sun concurred\, “Andrea Silvestrelli wielded a big\, black\, menacing bass in his debut as the assassin Sparafucile.” \nHis featured performances include : Hagen in Götterdämmerung in a return to the Taichung National Theater in Taiwan\, Grand Inquisitor in Don Carlo with the Dallas Opera and Sparafucile in Rigoletto with Opera San Antonio; he was Fafner in Siegfried in Taiwan\, and Geronte in Manon Lescaut and Pistola in Falstaff with the Dallas Opera. In the 2017-2018 season\, Mr. Silvestrelli was heard as Hunding in Die Walküre in Taiwan\, returned to Lyric Opera of Chicago as Nourabad in Les pêcheurs de perles and Timur in Turandot\, and sang the Grand Inquisitor in Don Carlo with Washington National Opera. In spring 2018\, he performed in San Francisco Opera’s Ring Cycle as Fasolt in Das Rheingold and Hagen in Götterdämmerung. \nMr. Silvestrelli’s performances in the 2016-2017 season included Fafner in Das Rheingold with National Taichung Theater\, Oroveso in Norma with Lyric Opera of Chicago\, Hagen in Götterdämmerung with Houston Grand Opera\, and the Commendatore in Don Giovanni and Sparafucile in Rigoletto\, both with San Francisco Opera. With SFO in 2015-2016\, he sang the role of Wurm in Luisa Miller\, The Night Watchman in Die Meistersinger von Nürnburg\, Don Basilio in Il barbiere di Siviglia\, and the Grand Inquisitor in Don Carlo. A classically trained pianist\, she has toured Russia\, Europe\, and the United States as a soloist\, duo pianist\, accompanist\, her collaborations include the world’s foremost performer of Baroque trumpet\, Crispian Steele-Perkins\, and most recently internationally acclaimed Italian singer Andrea Silvestrelli. As a duo pianist\, she won third prize at the First International Competition of Contemporary Music Interpretation in Weimar\, Germany (1996) and was chosen to perform at Purcell Room in London for the Park Lane Group Young Artists Concert Series. As a piano soloist\, she won the Kawai CD Recording Competition in 2004. \nMs. Feoktistova relocated to the United States in 1998\, and since then she has performed extensively in the Chicagoland area. She has been involved in numerous musical theater productions as an accompanist and music director. She is also active in various projects performing Russian and American contemporary music. She was affiliated with CUBE\, VOX 3 and MAVerick Ensembles in Chicago and the Union of Composers in St. Petersburg\, where she performed a program of American contemporary music at the international festival St. Petersburg Musical Spring in May of 2005. She was the Principal Keyboardist with Millennium Chamber Players (Chicago based ensemble). Irina made her Carnegie Hall debut as a soloist and an accompanist with Russian singer Vladimir Galouzine for The Russia Day concert on June 12th\, 2008. \nMrs. Feoktistova was an assistant conductor for the Lyric Opera production of Musorgsky “Boris Godunov” in 2011-2012 season. 2015/16 Performed as a piano soloist Schostakovich Piano Concerto N2 and Beethoven Triple Concerto with Lake Veiw Orchestra 2017/18 season Worked at the CSO on the production of Prokofiev’s “Ivan the Terrible” as a Russian coach with Gerard Depardieu and Chicago Children Choir. \nIn 2018/19 season she worked on the production of Iolanta by Tchaykovsky at the Chicago Opera Theater. In 2019/20 season took part in COT production of Rahmaninov’s Aleko and\nLyric Opera production of Tchaykovsky’s Queen of Spades. 2018 till present She is affiliated with the Appolo Chorus of Chicago and Chicago Children Choir.\nShe is on faculty of Northwestern University and Ryan Center of Lyric Opera of Chicago. In Summer 2020 she started new project “Colors in Music” with visual artist\nEvgenia Pirshina. In 2021 the duo won the 2nd prise for the presentation and live performance of Scriabin’s Poem “Vers La Flamme” with color animations for the International Performing Arts Competition “Stars of the Albion.Grand Prix 2021” (London\, UK). Acclaimed for her remarkable intensity of expression\, she is a laureate in international competitions including the Concours Ile-de-France\, Concours Musical de France\, Artist Presentation Society Competition (USA)\, Paderewski International Competition (USA)\, Krystian Tkaczewski International Piano Competition (Poland)\, Bradshaw & Buono International Competition\, and New York Piano Festival & Competition. In addition\, she was awarded the “Chopin Performance Prize” by the President of the Association of Polish Artists & Musicians in France\, and the “Debussy Special Prize” from both the IBLA Foundation and the Metropolitan International Piano Competition. SUMMARY:The Orion Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:To conclude its 30th anniversary season\, The Orion Ensemble expands its instrumental lineup and welcomes five exceptional guest musicians for a “Schubertiad\,” celebrating the work of Franz Schubert (1797–1828). Performances take place at three venues: New England Congregational Church in Aurora (May 14)\, PianoForte Studios in Chicago (May 17) and Nichols Concert Hall in Evanston (May 21). The Chicago and Evanston performances also will be available via livestream. \nThe program includes Schubert’s Octet in F Major for two violins\, viola\, cello\, bass\, clarinet\, bassoon and French horn. This work\, originally commissioned by Austrian philanthropist and amateur clarinetist Ferdinand Troyer\, is in six movements and features elegance\, luminous expression and profound originality. The first movement brims with lyrical energy\, while the second features lilting strings and a clarinet theme akin to Mozart. The third movement brings unbridled\, rustic joy. The fourth movement is a charming set of variations\, the fifth an elegant and sweetly lyrical minuet\, and the finale a grand symphonic venture in miniature. \nJoining Orion musicians Florentina Ramniceanu (violin)\, Judy Stone (cello) and Kathryne Pirtle (clarinet) for the Octet are Mathias Tacke (violin)\, previously second violinist of the Vermeer Quartet; frequent Orion guest artist and chamber musician Stephen Boe (viola); Robert Kassinger (bass) of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra; Andrei Muravev (bassoon) of the Chicago Sinfonietta; and Gregory Flint (horn)\, principal with the Elgin Symphony Orchestra. DESCRIPTION:Argentine pianist Julieta Iglesias will be performing a tribute to Astor Piazzolla at PianoForte Chicago. As part of her tour in the US\, Julieta will be making a very special stop in Chicago to help children in Argentina. All proceeds from the piano concert will be going to the Argentina Chicago Foundation to help finance educational projects in disadvantaged schools in Argentina during the period 2023-2024. \n\nJulieta Iglesias\, Pianist \nJulieta is an Argentine pianist based in London. She started her piano studies in 1995 and received the ‘Lía Cimaglia Espinosa’ scholarship and the Santa Cecilia Medal In 2008\, she graduated from the Universidad Nacional de las Artes and in 2017\, from the Astor Piazzolla Conservatoire (Buenos Aires). Since 2002\, Julieta has been performing in several festivals in important halls in Argentina\, UK\, US\, Germany\, Italy\, Belgium\, Sweden\, Spain\, France\, Holland\, Poland\, Hungary and Ireland\, playing classical\, tango and popular music. \nHer first steps into composition were as an arranger. In 2018\, Julieta recorded the album ‘Astor’ which is a tribute to the well-known tango composer and performed it in Argentina and Europe during 2018/2019. Since then\, I have traveled to play tango in Japan\, Italy\, England and the US. I’ve played in orquesta tipicas with Julian Plaza\, Victor Lavallen\, Sexteto Mayor\, musicians that played with Miguel Calo (La Orquesta Tipica Sans Souci). I’ve had the pleasure of playing in the touring tango shows: Tango Dreams\, Tango x 2 de Miguel Angel Zotto\, and Roberto Herrera & Compañia. I’ve recorded with quite a lot of tango musicians\, all of whom I deeply admire and respect. SUMMARY:Neoclassical Piano Evening w/Candace Nicol
DESCRIPTION:An evening of original works by Candace Nicol that embody the peaceful\, neoclassical style of piano playing. \nIntroduced to piano at the age of 7\, Candace immediately took to the classical world of Sonatinas and composers like Kuhlau and Beethoven. As the years went on\, her playing interests expanded to the more contemporary\, neoclassical styles of Dirk Maassen\, Ludovico Einaudi\, and others. \nShe largely kept piano to herself as a private passion and source of release until 2019 after reconnecting to the musician community in her hometown of Chicago. Inspired by these artists\, she began to compose her own songs; pulling from her traditional classical training and integrating it with contemporary sound and melody. \nShe prefers that her songs pull from specific experiences; to tell a story through an instrument and to exude emotion and depth. As a result\, many of her compositions have accompanying lyrics or poetry that she wrote and that played a major assist in how each melody was created. \nHer debut album\, Sketches from the Dark\, highlights her style of classical contemporary “storytelling.”

Santillan’s new work marks the Festival’s very first Keymore Commissioned Work. Shi-An Costello’s Piano Parents (2022) features voice memo recordings of parents reflecting on the experience of parenthood\, as it relates to the piano and the unique stories and relationships that intersect with the instrument. He soon became enamored with the expressive capabilities of the harpsichord and became passionate about the music of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. He has performed throughout the United States in both solo and chamber recitals and has served as a continuo player for many orchestras\, including The New York Strings Orchestra\, Apollo’s Fire\, and Juilliard415. He has been a concerto soloist with the Garth Newel Emerging Artist Orchestra\, the Birmingham Bloomfield Orchestra\, and Juilliard415 and has performed in many prestigious concert halls including Avery Fisher Hall and Carnegie Hall. \nDr. Yun is a strong advocate for new music written for the harpsichord. He has commissioned several new works for the instrument and has also appeared as soloist with the University of Michigan Symphony Orchestra where he premiered a new harpsichord concerto. \nAn educator at heart\, Dr. Yun has taught high school and college students throughout his career. He has taught at Montclair State University\, Brevard Music Center\, and is now serving as the Director of Music at Chatham Hall. \nDr. Yun also hosts a podcast\, “So Many Wrong Notes\,” where he and his co-host\, Jeannette Fang\, discuss issues that face many emerging music professionals. More can be found at somanywrongnotes.com. \nFeatured Composer: Aeryn Jade Santillan \nAeryn Jade Santillan (she/her) is a composer\, guitarist\, and bassist whose work is heavily influenced by the DIY punk scene and actively aims to blur the lines between band/ensemble and song/composition. \nAeryn performs bass and vocals in Massa Nera\, an experimental screamo quartet who’s toured in the USA\, Canada\, Malaysia\, Indonesia\, the Philippines\, and Japan. Along with composer/guitarist Andrew Noseworthy\, she co-founded this place is actually the worst\, an experimental mathcore duo\, and post-genre DIY label\, people | places | records. She’s been commissioned by 45th Parallel Universe\, Bang on a Can\, Del Sol String Quartet\, Gabriela Lena Frank’s Creative Academy of Music\, ~Nois\, percussionist Adam Groh\, and more. \nAeryn holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Columbia College Chicago and a Master of Music in Theory and Composition degree from New York University. Previous mentors include Gabriela Lena Frank\, Michael Gordon\, Julia Wolfe\, Marcos Balter\, David Reminick\, Drew Baker\, and Ilya Levinson. Shi-An’s compositions have been featured at Contemporary Arts Center\, Tribeca New Music New York\, Chicago Cultural Center\, Garth Newel Music Center\, Asian Improv Arts Midwest\, Université de Montréal\, Pollack Hall and Redpath Hall of McGill University\, Dalhousie University\, University of Richmond\, Constellation Chicago and Array Music Toronto. \nHailed by Philippe Leroux as “Shi-An finds the depth in every note” and the late Frederic Rzewski as “a winner\,” Shi-An\, as a pianist\, has worked personally with over 150 composers from all over the world in solo\, ensemble and chamber settings. Shi-An has commissioned new works by Viet Cuong\, Danny Clay\, Alex Temple\, Ana Paola Santillan Alcocer\, Aeryn Santillan\, morgan krauss\, Jimmie Leblanc\, David Reminick\, Marielle Groven\, Kurt Isaacson\, and has worked personally with composers Philippe Leroux\, Frederic Rzewski\, Jerome Kitzke\, Serge Provost\, Keeril Makan\, Marti Epstein\, Anthony Cheung\, James O’Callaghan\, Eliza Brown\, Thomas Carr\, and many other brilliant composers around the world. \nA dedicated advocate and administrator. Costello founded and directed the Morton Feldman Chamber Players (MFCP) from 2013-2017\, founded and served as artistic director of Vox Humana collective of speaking musicians from 2011-2013\, and co-founded and served as president of Cadre composer collective at Columbia College from 2008-2010. Currently\, he serves on the Board of Directors of New Music Chicago and The _____ Experiment\, and is the artistic director and lead curator of the Keymore Festival for contemporary piano and keyboard music. He has also curated events at Experimental Sound Studio\, Narloch Piano Studio\, Marvin Duchow Music Library of McGill University\, and Cathédrale Christ Church (Montreal). \nCostello previously held position as Visiting Artist and Piano faculty at Boston Conservatory at Berklee and New Music School. He has been a guest artist lecturer at numerous universities and institutions across North America. He holds degrees in Music Composition and Performance from Columbia College and the Schulich School of Music of McGill University.

SUMMARY:Peruvian Music in the 1800's
DESCRIPTION:Voice\, Piano and Guitar Recital \nRafael Vivanco started playing the guitar at the age of 11 in Peru. He went on to complete his Bachelor of Music degree in classical guitar performance at the University of British Columbia in Canada\, and his Master’s at Roosevelt University in Chicago. Rafael was sponsored to perform and teach in the US for over 10 years by Jim Scoglieti of Sherry Brener\, the Spanish guitar importer and Guitarra Magazine editor that collaborated with icons such as Andres Segovia. Rafael has performed in the Chicago Latino Music Festival\, the Chicago Flamenco Festival\, the Latin American Guitar Festival of Chicago\, the Milwaukee International Guitar Festival\, among others\, and his performances have been broadcast on public radio. In 2017 he was artist in residence at the Cervantes Institute of Chicago. Currently Rafael has been producing live events that incorporate music\, dance and poetry.\n \nSarah Loisch began her musical studies at an early age alongside her six older siblings. The family’s active involvement in vocal and instrumental learning led to performances across the state of Indiana. Upon discovering a deep connection to piano literature\, she committed to full-time musical studies and was an active collaborator and performer with orchestras and ensembles throughout her undergraduate and graduate studies. After completing her MA in Piano at Eastern Illinois University studying under Dr. Victor Cayres\, Miss Loisch traveled to Crete and Italy to pursue further instruction and collaboration with musicians and teachers such as Thomas Pandolfi and Constantinos Papadakis.  As a performer\, Miss Loisch seeks to express the intersection of life and music in her work. In addition to her performance endeavors\, she maintains a private teaching studio where she believes technique and musicianship work together to foster a greater appreciation and love for the art of music. Sarah Loisch studied with Paul Kenyon during her BA in Music program at Olivet Nazarene University. Throughout her studies\, she has made multiple concerto appearances performing works by Chopin\, Rachmaninoff\, Mendelssohn\, and Saint-Saens. \nJillian Krickl began her choral singing career while she was an undergraduate at The University of Chicago. She has been a member of Holy Name Cathedral’s all-professional Schola Cantorum Cathedralis since graduation. She also performs locally and nationally with acclaimed groups as both a soloist and backup singer. Most recently Jillian was featured as the vocal soloist performing Gregorian chants corresponding to select movements from Charles Tournemire’s L’Orgue Mystique Op. 57\, performed by Stephen Tharp. Recent backup singing engagements include Sarah Brightman’s 2021 “Christmas Symphony” concert at the Auditorium Theatre and Josh Groban’s 2022 Harmony Tour concert at the Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre. When she is not singing\, Jillian also enjoys travel\, hiking\, and “Better Call Saul” fandom.
