The evening will include a brief introductory talk offering insight into his work as composer\, researcher\, and collector. \nThe program unfolds in two formats—solo piano and mezzo-soprano with piano\, featuring Noelia Ibáñez—and traces a musical journey that places Donostia at the center of a rich lineage. With 40 years of honing his craft\, he found inspiration in California’s diverse landscapes\, particularly its majestic mountains and vast Pacific coastline. Seeking change\, Mr. Stoermer relocated to Chicago in 2000\, where the city’s urban landscape and diversity influenced him to create numerous new works.

DESCRIPTION:New films set to timeless music: American Quartet and La Folía \nFeaturing the Avalon Quartet \nThe Avalon Quartet returns to PianoForte Chicago for a presentation of two award-winning short films performed in sync with two audience favorite pieces. The acclaimed American Quartet\, directed by Jesca Prudencio and set to the poignant first movement of Antonín Dvořák’s work of the same name\, is “a marvelous sci-fi short film about the power of hope and human empathy to defeat hate and division” (Rod Faulkner). The immortal La Folía melody comes to life in a visual anthology of twenty-four ultra-short vignettes\, directed by Adam Grannick\, that “is a reminder that\, while life isn’t perfect\, there’s a dancer\, or an artist\, in all of us. And drawing on that can unlock a little magic when we need it most” (Dance Magazine). Watch the trailers for the two films below. \nLa Folía and American Quartet are part of Adam Grannick’s Filmelodic series\, which has been celebrated at film festivals around the world\, as well as at Jazz at Lincoln Center\, the Richard Wagner Museum at Bayreuth\, the National Opera Center\, the Museum of the Moving Image\, and the Brooklyn Museum. The series has also been featured in the BBC\, WQXR\, Dance Magazine\, the Violin Channel\, and Gothamist. This award was founded by Steinway Artist Victor Santiago Asunción who was Lynn’s pianist and sonata partner for over 20 years. The winners of this award have included John Henry Crawford\, Gabriel Martins\, and tonight’s debutante\, Rainer Crosett. \n  \nPraised for his “tone that moves effortlessly between elegance and fire” (Westfälische Nachrichten)\, cellist Rainer Crosett is active as a chamber musician and soloist throughout Europe and North America. A First Prize winner at the “Manuel de Falla” Piano Competition in Mexico City\, he has graced the stage of major concert halls across Mexico\, Asia\, the Middle East\, Europe\, South America\, and the United States. Recent highlights include critically acclaimed recitals in Belgium\, Dubai\, Chicago\, and Milwaukee. \nAs a soloist\, Mr. Horcasitas has performed with distinguished ensembles\, including the Chamber Orchestra of Singapore and the Lebanese Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also taught at the Diller Quaile School of Music in New York City and currently holds the position of Private Instruction Coordinator and Piano Faculty at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music. \nMr. Horcasitas holds the Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the Manhattan School of Music\, where he studied under Nina Svetlanova. SUMMARY:Tales Without Words: Passionate Piano Concert
DESCRIPTION:An evening of intimate storytelling through music by Bach\, Chopin and Medtner. \n\n\n\n\nThe evening opens with Medtner’s Sonata Reminiscenza\, a piece that feels like a memory rising to the surface before it has found words — searching\, tender\, incomplete. It leads into Bach’s English Suite No. 2 in A minor\, where storytelling takes on the shape of Baroque dance\, full of life\, wit and reflection. \nFrom there\, Bach’s English Suite No. 3 in G minor returns to that same courtly language in a darker key\, setting the stage for Chopin’s Ballade No. 1 in G minor\, a piece that behaves like a story in the truest sense: it has a beginning\, a rising tension\, and a conclusion that arrives less like a resolution than an inevitability. \nPerformed without intermission\, as one continuous journey. \n\nDaria Vasileva is a passionate concert pianist and project author who inspires not only her listeners but also her more than 80\,000 subscribers on social networks\, all united by their love for classical music. Daria received a classical education at one of Russia’s largest conservatories\, in Kazan\, where she honed her skills as a concert performer\, ensemble artist\, accompanist and teacher. \nAfter graduating from the conservatory and winning several international competitions\, including Smetana International Piano Competition in the Czech Republic\, Daria was awarded an ESKAS grant from the Swiss government to study at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Lucerne. Under the guidance of Professor Benjamin Moser\, Daria became captivated by performing the music of Alexander Scriabin\, one of the most passionate and emotionally renowned composers in the world. Scriabin’s music resonates particularly well with Daria’s vibrant and open-minded character. In 2024 Daria won Second Prize (ex aequo\, First prize was not awarded) and Special Scriabin Prize at XXVI International Scriabin Competition in Grosseto\, Italy. \n\n“With the highest degree of identification\, Mrs. Vasileva succeeded in bringing each sonata to life with its own characteristics. Montgomery – Strum \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe award-winning Kyan Quartet brings together four exceptional musicians from the United Kingdom\, the United States\, China\, and France. Established in 2020\, the quartet enjoys a busy and vibrant career\, having performed across Europe and Asia in venues including Wigmore Hall\, St. Martin-in-the-Fields\, Beethoven-Haus Chamber Music Hall\, Shanghai Opera House\, and Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra Hall. \nAs first prize winners of this year’s DYNAMIKfest Salzburg Chamber Music Competition\, the Kyans are looking forward to touring across Europe and the USA in 2026. They are also prizewinners of the 2024 Royal Over-Seas League Competition in London. Recent highlights include three performances at the Barbican Centre as part of the Carducci Quartet’s Shostakovich cycle project\, guitar quintets at Conway Hall with Ahmed Dickinson\, and a tour across Scotland as Tunnell Trust award holders.  The quartet are grateful to be supported by Le Dimore del Quartetto and City Music Foundation. \nThe Kyans have held residencies with the Britten Pears Young Artist Programme\, Fondazione I Teatri’s Casa del Quartetto and the South Downs Summer Music International Festival. They have won places on prestigious courses\, including the 2024 International Beethoven Masterclass in Bonn\, Jeunesses Musicales Deutschland’s 70th International Chamber Music Campus\, the 49th Musical Artistry Goslar Summer Academy\, and Chamber Studio’s inaugural Hans Keller Forum. Through these they have received coaching from all members of the Belcea and Doric quartets\, Heime Müller\, Günter Pichler\, Jana Kuss\, Alasdair Beatson and Péter Nagy. The quartet has also been coached by members of the Heath\, Jerusalem and Pavel Haas Quartets. They are currently being mentored at the Mozarteum University by Cibrán Sierra Vazquez\, Rainer Schmidt and William Coleman.  \nWidening musical participation and access is central to the quartet’s artistic mission. They are Live Music Now artists\, sharing their love of participatory music-making in care homes and SEND schools. The quartet give masterclasses and work with young composers at the Junior Royal Academy of Music. As the 2022/23 fellows of the Open Academy/Wigmore Hall Learning Programme\, they appeared regularly on the Wigmore Hall stage and in community settings\, sharing music with families\, young children\, and those living with dementia.  A particular highlight was leading workshops across six primary schools in Tower Hamlets\, in partnership with Spitalfields Music.  \nThe Kyan Quartet pride themselves on championing new music. Gershwin – 3 Preludes for Violin and Piano\, arr. by Jascha Heifetz \nViolinist Clarissa Bevilacqua is known to enchant audiences with her deeply inspiring musicality\, and her playing has been described as “luminously elevated” (Gramophone) and “elegant and nimble” (The Strad). Clarissa has made several highly anticipated debuts as a soloist\, most notably with the Münchner Symphoniker and the Münchener Kammerorchester\, Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo\, BBC National Orchestra of Wales\, Cape Symphony\, Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra\, Orchestra della Toscana\, Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto\, as well as at the opening concert of Mozartwoche with the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg. DESCRIPTION:The American Chamber Music Society Presents: \nSUMMER 1914 \n“Electric . . . [the] performance extracted all the tensions\, fun\, and charm that can be found” \n~THIRD COAST REVIEW \nIn the summer of 1914\, Europe stood on the edge of a new era. While young men across the continent were preparing for war\, Maurice Ravel was finishing his Piano Trio in the French Basque country\, writing with a feverish intensity. He completed it in a matter of weeks\, driven by his determination to finish before joining the war effort. It would become one of the most celebrated works for violin\, cello\, and piano of its time. Decades later\, Shostakovich and Arvo Pärt would each confront their own periods of upheaval\, searching for new ways forward while the world around them changed. \nWinner of the Carlos Prieto International Cello Competition\, John-Henry Crawford joins acclaimed pianist Victor Santiago Asunción and ACMS Artistic Director and violinist Eric Gratz for three deeply personal works shaped by uncertainty\, transformation\, and the passage of time. \nACMS performs all concerts at PianoForte\, an intimate 75-seat concert hall with spectacular acoustics in downtown Chicago’s South Loop neighborhood. SUMMARY:Homage to Yves Mathieu’s Cabaret Lapin Agile
DESCRIPTION:Part I – Solo piano by Jean Claude Orfali \nPart II – A potpourri of Paris in songs \n\n\nJean-Claude Orfali is a favorite of PianoForte Chicago’s owner Thomas Zoells for good reason. His ability to create infinite variations of musical themes\, the delightful technique of embellishment and emotion\, have captured his audiences from Paris to Montréal\, Cairo to Chicago. A longtime principal pianist at the Lapin Agile\, he will begin our evening of homage to Yves Mathieu\, the late owner of the Cabaret Lapin Agile. \n\n\nThe Lapin Agile is the oldest extant cabaret room in Paris\, the birthplace of cabaret as a gathering place for musicians and artists. So many of us associated with the Cabaret Connexion have had the honor of participating in the ongoing late-nights of song and camaraderie. We will celebrate the family legacy carried through by Yves Mathieu and now his sons Frederic and Vincent with songs and a short video montage by Christine Steyer and Jean-Claude Orfali. Internationally acclaimed as both a performer and master teacher\, she has built a career that bridges the great traditions of classical performance with excellence in modern music education. Trained in the distinguished Russian pianistic tradition\, Dr. Lipmanovich is the Founder and Artistic Director of The Art of Piano Playing & Performing Arts\, located in Chicago’s historic Fine Arts Building. \nDr. Lipmanovich began her musical studies at an early age with her mother\, pianist and renowned teacher Madame Luba Lipmanovich-Yackobishvili\, and later continued her studies in Moscow with the celebrated pianist Tatiana Nikolayeva. She received her Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance from The Juilliard School in New York\, where she was a protege student  on a full scholarship studied with the legendary pedagogue Madame Rosina Lhevinne. She earned her Master of Music degree from the Rubin Academy of Music at Tel Aviv University\, studying with Professor Pnina Salzman and Professor Arie Vardi\, and completed her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Piano Performance at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign\, where she studied with Professor Ian Hobson. \nAn award-winning pianist\, Dr. Lipmanovich won the Soviet Composers Piano Competition in Moscow and the Young Artists International Competition in New York\, leading to her debut recital at Carnegie Hall. Described by Mstislav Rostropovich as a “world-class violinist”  distinguished by “versatile virtuosity\, beautiful and expressive sound\,  artistry\, and bright performing charisma\,” Tyfer has performed as a soloist  and chamber musician in the United States\, Europe\, and Russia. \nHe is a prize-winner of international violin and chamber music  competitions in Russia\, the United States\, Italy\, and Bulgaria. \nEducated in the Russian violin tradition\, Tyfer began his musical  studies at the age of six. Internationally acclaimed as both a performer and master teacher\, she has built a career that bridges the great traditions of classical performance with excellence in modern music education. Trained in the distinguished Russian pianistic tradition\, Dr. Lipmanovich is the Founder and Artistic Director of The Art of Piano Playing & Performing Arts\, located in Chicago’s historic Fine Arts Building. \nDr. Lipmanovich began her musical studies at an early age with her mother\, pianist and renowned teacher Madame Luba Lipmanovich-Yackobishvili\, and later continued her studies in Moscow with the celebrated pianist Tatiana Nikolayeva. She received her Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance from The Juilliard School in New York\, where she was a protege student  on a full scholarship studied with the legendary pedagogue Madame Rosina Lhevinne.
