Ian went on to work with Bonnie Farrer and Errol Haun\, both who had studied with the late pedagogue Rosina Lhévinne. He earned a Doctor of Musical Arts in 2011 under the guidance of Ian Hobson at the University of Illinois. \nMr. Gindes has received many awards\, including first prize in the 2011 Bradshaw and Buono International Piano Competition\, an invitation to perform at the Bradshaw and Buono Festival of Music in 2014\, and a CD collection in his name donated to the University of Colorado at Boulder library. This collection is one of largest of its kind in the United States. Gindes’ 2016 recording\, American Visions\, celebrated the American musical tradition from the 20th century to the present. It included works by Copland and Gershwin as well as by contemporary composers. Gindes’ recording was praised by Gramophone magazine for his “keyboard brilliance.” He received acclaim for his recording from The Whole Note magazine\, New York Concert Review\, and Fanfare. He was also a featured artist on Chicago’s own classical music station\, WFMT. \nRecently\, Ian was interviewed on WAIF Radio of Cincinnati\, OH. He has been featured on WDWS AM 1400 and WILL radio of Champaign-Urbana\, IL\, as well as on WGN-TV Chicago’s Midday Fix and on Sandy and Friends on AZTV Channel 7 of Phoenix\, AZ. His music has been featured on Jed Distler’s show Between The Keys on WWFM and on the Radio Arts Foundation of St. Louis\, MO\, as well as on American Veterans Radio and SiriusXM Symphony Hall. \nIn the 2018-2019 season\, Ian Gindes was the featured soloist with the Belleville Philharmonic and the St. Louis Philharmonic. He also gave solo recitals in the St. Louis area and recorded the Rachmaninoff Third Piano Concerto with the Janacek Philharmonic Orchestra in the Czech Republic. His current projects include developing a new video series on YouTube and recording Rachmaninoff’s works for piano. \nIn addition to his performance career\, Mr. Gindes continues to share his passion for music via social media and teaching. SUMMARY:WDCB Live Broadcast / "Women in Jazz" featuring pianist Deanna Witkowski
DESCRIPTION:WDCB will broadcast a live performance of Leslie Keros’s weekly “Women in Jazz” spotlight with a concert by pianist Deanna Witkowski. Deanna will perform from noon to 1 p.m. before an first-come\, first-served audience\, and Leslie will host the event. \nKnown for her adventurous\, engaging music that heals the soul\, pianist-composer-vocalist Deanna Witkowski moves with remarkable ease between Brazilian\, jazz\, classical\, and sacred music. Her first book\, Mary Lou Williams: Music For The Soul (Liturgical Press)\, published in September 2021\, is the winner of the 2022 ASCAP Foundation Deems Taylor/Virgil Thomson Award and the 2022 Jazz Journalists Association Award for Biography of the Year. Her seventh recording\, Force of Nature (MCG Jazz)\, released in January 2022\, reached number five on the JazzWeek nationwide radio chart and remained in the top ten most played albums on jazz radio for more than ten weeks. The two projects cap a twenty-year deep dive into the ground-breaking impact of Williams’ life and music\, making Witkowski one of the few living authorities on the iconic pianist. As a sought after Williams expert\, she has presented at the Kennedy Center\, Duke University\, Fordham University\, and performed Williams’ compositions as a featured guest with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. \nIn concert and on recordings\, Witkowski’s explosive performances combine virtuosity and heart\, telling stories that reveal her innate curiosity of the human condition. Her albums range from powerhouse arrangements of Cole Porter standards (Wide Open Window; Length of Days) to sparkling trio re-imaginings of traditional hymns (Makes the Heart to Sing: Jazz Hymns) to solo piano that blurs the lines between Brazilian\, jazz\, and classical (Raindrop: Improvisations with Chopin). Witkowski has recorded with Grammy nominees John Patitucci\, Kate McGarry\, and Donny McCaslin\, and has performed and toured with renowned vocalists Lizz Wright\, Nnenna Freelon\, Erin Bode\, Filó Machado\, and Vanessa Rubin. \nDedicated to bringing communities together through jazz\, Witkowski has worked as a guest music leader in over one hundred churches across the United States. Her weekly video series\, “Off the Page: Sacred Jazz\,” shares practical resources for church musicians and her jazz hymn arrangements have been purchased by over 500 churches. \nA prolific choral composer\, Witkowski has won multiple competitions for her concert and sacred works. Commissions and new compositions have been funded by organizations including the New York State Council on the Arts (for her Afro-Brazilian project\, the Nossa Senhora Suite) and the Choral Arts Initiative PREMIERE|Project Festival. \nFollowing in the steps of her chosen soul companion and lifelong mentor\, Witkowski relocated to Mary Lou Williams’ hometown of Pittsburgh in 2020. She is a doctoral candidate in jazz studies at the University of Pittsburgh. \n \n

SUMMARY:Kariné Poghosyan / "All That Jazz"
DESCRIPTION:Program: \nAlberto Ginastera \nPiano Sonata no.1\, Op.22 \nI Allegro marcato \nII Presto misterioso \nIII Adagio molto appassionato \nIV Ruvido ed ostinato \n  \nSamuel Coleridge-Taylor \nSelections from Three-Fours\, op.71 \nNo.2 Andante\, A-flat Major \nNo.3 Allegro\, G Minor \n  \nTania Léon \nTumbao \n  \nArno Babajanian \nSolo Piano Selections \nMelody (1970) \nTwo Selections from Six Pictures (1964): \n-No.2 Folk Song \n– No.3 Toccatina \nElegie (1978) \nDance of Vagharshapat (1943) \n  \nGeorge Gershwin \nRhapsody in Blue (1924) \n*in celebration of the 100th Anniversary of its premiere \n  \nProgram Notes: \nWhat has always impressed me\, a classical concert pianist\, about George Gershwin (1898-1937) was just how effortlessly he navigated and often combined different styles of classical\, jazz\, and pop music. This genre-defying approach is one of the reasons why his iconic Rhapsody in Blue is such a unifier\, connecting to people of all backgrounds since its premiere on February 12\, 1924! As an artist\, my mission is indeed to seek ways to unify – to create points of connections\, both among compositional styles and among my listeners. And so\, what is the point of connection among an Argentine\, an Afro-Englishman\, a Cuban-American\, an Armenian\, and the son of Jewish immigrants from Odessa? All five composers reached to go beyond the Western Classical forms and techniques toward something much more ancient\, a Paul Gauguinesque desire to embrace primal folk elements. This creates a remarkably cohesive theme among the five of them\, with various “cross-pollinations” and commonalities. Both Ginastera and Babajanian embraced their respective folk traditions\, while also exploring modernist 20th century elements such as the 12-tone serialist techniques. Both Coleridge-Taylor and Tania León were spurred to return to their roots\, embracing rhythmic and melodic elements that could be traced back to African songs and dances. And of course\, the overarching theme of Jazz\, with spicy dissonant sonorities and Afro-Cuban driving rhythms unify all five composers. Alberto Ginastera (1916-1983)\, born in Buenos Aires to a Spanish father and an Italian mother\, was prolific in all major genres including opera\, ballet\, symphonic and smaller-scale ensemble works\, and even film music. Samuel Coleridge- Taylor (1875-1912) was born in London\, and had the most remarkable journey as a composer\, fully finding his musical identity only after visiting the United States. My friend\, the renowned WQXR host Terrance McKnight remarked “this music sounds like being in Love. Here is a composer who has given himself permission to love himself and be at peace with who he is.” Tania León\, born in 1943\, in Havana\, Cuba\, is undoubtedly one of the most impactful composers and musical figures of our time. Her astonishing achievements include Kennedy Center Honors\, a Pulitzer Prize\, and a Guggenheim Fellowship. Her father deeply inspired her compositional journey\, by asking her one day after\, hearing a recent early work\, “Where are you in your music?” This question urged her to embrace her roots and proudly incorporate rhythmic and motivic elements of Cuban music. Arno Babajanian (1921-1983) was born in Yerevan\, Armenia\, and showcased such prodigious talent at the age of 5 as to receive the encouragement and the blessings of Aram Khachaturian himself. Babajanian’s writing is centered around Armenian folk music\, however similarly to Ginastera\, he easily navigated many different styles\, ranging from pop to serialism\, as seen in the five selections on the program. \n– Kariné Poghosyan \n  \nThis concert is made possible by AGBU Chicago. \n  \nBiography: \n“There is such a sense of joy\, even ecstasy as she plays.” This is how NY1’s Stephanie Simon describes concert pianist Kariné Poghosyan’s performances. Ms. Poghosyan’s most recent concerts include several sold-out recitals at Carnegie Hall. Her “Rachmaninoff and Stravinsky” CD was praised by the Gramophone for its “masterly textural layering and resounding climaxes\,” and the American Record Guide stated that “a more heroic program would be hard to find\, and few could play as well as the Armenian- American Poghosyan.” Ms. Poghosyan was featured in WQXR’s “Chopin Marathon” live webcast\, and David Osenberg’s award-winning program on WWFM\, Cadenza. During the pandemic\, she performed 100 weekly virtual concerts\, gathering a loyal world-wide following and press coverage from the Pianist Magazine\, Katie Couric’s newsletter The Wake-up Call\, and ABC’s Rick Rowe. In February 2023\, Ms. Poghosyan released her third album Folk Themes on Parma Recordings\, available now on Amazon\, AppleMusic\, Spotify\, etc. This past season\, she performed solo recitals at Ehrbar Saal in Vienna and the Soraya Performing Arts Center in Northridge\, California\, as well as concerti performances with the Wallingford Symphony and Evanston Symphony Orchestras. This season\, Ms.Poghosyan has made her solo recital debuts in Milan\, Italy with a CD Release concert\, and the iconic Sheldon Concert Hall in Saint Louis\, presented by the Saint Louis University as part of their All-Steinway initiative. Ms. Poghosyan curates and performs her own monthly Lecture-Recital broadcasts on Patreon for a global audience of patrons tuning in on Zoom. She refers to these concert series as one of her proudest artistic achievements\, “These inspirational monthly events bring together music-lovers for 3 different experiences – the unique live performances\, a chance to learn more about the music and composers\, but above all\, the feeling of togetherness as they connect with each other in the community. In my own way\, I wanted to create a similar experience to Leonard Bernstein’s Young Peoples’ Concerts\, except mine would be for people of all ages and backgrounds\, tuning in on zoom from all over the world on the last Sunday each month to experience the Joy of live music. My vision is to expand their reach and impact much further\, andcreate PBS-worthy monthly productions for the patrons to experience live from the comfort of their homes. For 2024\, I have created 3 differently themed series\, “Vienna”\, “Chopin\, ” and “Concerti in D”\, with four programs in each.”\nFor more information on these concerts series\, go to www.patreon.com/karinepoghosyan

SUMMARY:Young Musicians Exchange Concert Series
DESCRIPTION:An exciting project this spring is being launched to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Chicago-Hamburg sister city partnership! \nThe Young Musicians Exchange\, hosted by the Hamburg Committee of Chicago Sister Cities International (CSCI)\, will bring to Chicago the three winners of Hamburg’s 2024 Jugend Musiziert competition and provide opportunities for them to perform at local venues. \nThe long-standing Jugend Musiziert is one of the largest European music competitions\, in which thousands of youth participate each year. Our three young performers — ages 15\, 17\, and 19 — not only won their state competition in Hamburg\, but also were winners in the overall federal competition. \nWe are looking forward to their performances in Chicago and hope that their visit will enrich their professional training during a pivotal point in their careers while supporting the educational and cultural ties that the Hamburg Committee of CSCI has long fostered.

SUMMARY:Brendan Fox: Consolation / Revelation
DESCRIPTION:Milwaukee-based pianist Brendan Fox presents Consolation / Revelation\, a recital built around two major works: Eric Wubbels’ contemporary tour de force Consolation\, and Beethoven’s transcendent final piano sonata in C minor\, Op. 111. \nEric Wubbels\, pianist and co-director of the Wet Ink Ensemble\, composed Consolation in 2004. In this grand exploration of the piano\, Xenakis-esque maximalism meets spectralism and phasing techniques. The music traverses a wide spectrum of moods\, from exaltation to melancholy. \nBeethoven’s last piano sonata traces a journey from darkness to light\, its stormy opening movement followed by a set of variations that pushes the bounds of his musical language in its growing revelation. \nOther\, shorter works tie together this program that finds meaning and wisdom in dark emotions. \nProgram: \nNadia Boulanger: Vers la vie nouvelle\nJohannes Brahms: Capriccio in F-sharp minor\, Op. 76\, No. 1; Intermezzo in B minor\, Op. 119\, No. 1\nEric Wubbels: Consolation\nManuel Ponce: Romanza de amor\nLudwig van Beethoven: Sonata No. 32 in C minor\, Op. 111 \nBrendan Fox holds a Bachelor of Music in Piano and Composition from Wheaton College (IL) and a Master of Music in Composition from Ithaca College. Past performances have included a lecture-recital of Charles Ives’ Concord Sonata\, which he brought to cities including New York\, Chicago\, Milwaukee\, and Toronto. He has played collaboratively with the Wisconsin Philharmonic and Milwaukee Children’s Choir\, and his works have been performed by Tontine Ensemble and the Milwaukee Philharmonic. He writes Milwaukee arts coverage for Shepherd Express and is the manager of the classical department at music publisher Hal Leonard.

SUMMARY:Dvorak’s Vision for America / Avalon String Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Dvorak was beloved for incorporating folk elements in his compositions\, and he encouraged American composers to do the same with their indigenous music. Three works by Americans of different generations demonstrate the power and potential of Dvorak’s idea. \nProgram: \nFlorence Price: Quartet No. 1 in G Major\nAmy Beach: Quartet Op. 89\nJerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate: Pisachi (Reveal)\nAntonín Dvořák: String Quartet No. 13 in G Major Op. 106 \n  \nDescribed by the Chicago Tribune as “an ensemble that invites you — ears\, mind\, and spirit — into its music\,” the Avalon String Quartet has established itself as one of the country’s leading chamber music ensembles. \nThe Avalon has performed in major venues including Carnegie Hall\, Alice Tully Hall\, the 92nd St Y\, Merkin Hall\, and Bargemusic in New York; the Library of Congress and National Gallery of Art in Washington DC; Wigmore Hall in London; and Herculessaal in Munich. Other performances include appearances at the Bath International Music Festival\, Aldeburgh Festival\, Caramoor\, La Jolla Chamber Music Society\, NPR’s St. Paul Sunday\, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum\, Dame Myra Hess Concerts\, Los Angeles Music Guild\, and the Ravinia Festival. The quartet performs an annual concert series in historic Fullerton Hall at the Art Institute of Chicago\, where it has presented the complete quartet cycles of Beethoven\, Bartok\, and Brahms in recent seasons. The Avalon is quartet-in-residence at the Northern Illinois University School of Music\, a position formerly held by the Vermeer Quartet. Additional teaching activities have included the Icicle Creek Chamber Music Institute\, Interlochen Advanced Quartet Program\, Madeline Island Music Camp\, and the Britten-Pears School in England\, as well as masterclasses at universities and conservatories throughout the United States. Additionally\, they have given numerous performances and presentations to young audiences in under-resourced schools and communities. \nIn 2015\, the quartet released “Illuminations”\, its first recording for Cedille Records. It was met with praise from NY Times\, WQXR radio and Chicago Tribune. This recording follows a critically acclaimed CD of contemporary American works on the Albany label in 2010. The Avalon String Quartet’s debut CD\, Dawn to Dusk\, featuring quartets by Ravel and Janacek\, was honored with the 2002 Chamber Music America/WQXR Record Award for best chamber music recording. The quartet’s live performances and conversations are frequently featured on Chicago fine arts radio station WFMT. They have also been heard on New York’s WQXR and WNYC\, National Public Radio’s Performance Today\, Canada’s CBC\, Australia’s ABC\, the ARD of Germany\, and France Musique. \nThe Avalon captured the top prize at the ARD Competition in Munich (2000) and First Prize at the Concert Artists Guild Competition in New York City (1999).
