SUMMARY:As Is | "Crazy World" Album Release Concert
DESCRIPTION:Described as “nothing short of enchanting” (All About Jazz)\, the musical union of jazz guitarist\, Al Schulman and jazz vocal stylist Stacey Schulman is the heart of As Is. The couple — both on and offstage — have made a name for themselves for their imaginative re-expressions of 20th century song classics. As Jazz Mostly wrote\, “They find new ways to approach the songs\, ways that preserve the origins yet make out of them very personal statements. \nThis concert performance will feature the debut of their new release\, “Crazy World” — an expansive mix of jazz repertoire combined with samba\, soul\, and original material. “Crazy World” is the follow-up to their Billboard Top 10 charting album “Here’s to Life”. \nAs Is takes audiences on an intimate journey through the world and words of songs long-forgotten — but newly created — with both the soulfulness and swing that’s accessible\, memorable and highly musical. \nThe duo has toured extensively in the US\, Europe and Asia performing live and in the studio with contemporary jazz talents including Marcus Baylor\, David Binney\, Christie Dashiell\, Corcoran Holt\, Kokayi\, and Gregoire Maret. \nThe duo’s musical paths extend well beyond any single scene. Stacey Schulman grew up recording in studios and working across country\, rock\, and metal before moving more fully into jazz and the American Songbook\, drawing from the lineage of classic singers such as Nancy Wilson and Dinah Washington. Possessed with an enchanting and singular voice\, with bell-like clarity of tone\, wide stylistic range\, and emotional directness\, Schulman has forged an expansive career grounded in adaptability\, musicianship\, and a passion for performing live and connecting with audiences. Scott Yanow\, in Jazz Artistry Now\, notes that “Stacey’s calling cards are ballads where both the strength and expressiveness of her art shine\,” while All About Jazz describes her agile voice as “delicate lace on one song and bouncy jam on another.” \nAl\, originally from Cincinnati\, studied early with Benny Goodman’s guitarist Cal Collins\, and refined his bebop language in Chicago at the Bloom School of Jazz\, where he performed as both a leader and sideman with artists such as Charles Earland\, Brad Goode\, Chris Forman and others. He went on to immerse himself in arranging and composition at Howard University in Washington\, D.C. studying with such jazz greats as Grady Tate\, Geri Allen\, Keter Betts and James Williams. \nWhile his sound draws deeply from the jazz-blues guitar lineage of Kenny Burrell\, Grant Green\, and George Benson\, his sound is equally shaped by the soul and R&B traditions of Ernie Isley and Wilbert Longmire\, giving his sound both harmonic weight and forward motion.

SUMMARY:Echoes Across Horizons: American Voices in Classical Piano | Junwen Liang
DESCRIPTION:This program celebrates the vast and multifaceted landscape of American classical music through a collection of voices that echo across time\, genre\, and culture. From the lyrical impressionism of Amy Beach and the spiritual depth of Florence Price\, to the cross-cultural energy of Tan Dun and the theatrical elegance of Stephen Hough’s musical theatre transcriptions\, these works embody a vibrant conversation between traditions both inherited and reimagined. At the heart of the program is a belief in the power of diversity—musical\, cultural\, and personal—to enrich the classical tradition. These pieces reflect stories often overlooked: voices of women\, immigrants\, and composers bridging worlds between concert halls and popular stages. Together\, they invite listeners to reconsider what “American music” means\, revealing a tapestry that is as rich and resonant as the country itself. \n  \nDescribed by Richard Goode as “a very gifted pianist and a musician of great sensitivity\,” Chinese pianist Junwen Liang has earned recognition for performances of poetic refinement and intellectual depth. Stroll Magazine praised his “captivating” artistry\, while New York Concert Review described him as “an extremely gifted and promising young artist.” The American Prize commended his playing as “subtle\, refined\, and beautifully executed\,” and In the Spotlight affirmed that he is “ready for a major career.” \nJunwen has appeared as soloist with the Central Texas Philharmonic\, Penn State Philharmonic\, and Ithaca College Symphony Orchestra\, with performances broadcast on WRTI Classical\, WSKG\, and KPR Public Radio. Equally accomplished in chamber music\, he was named “Outstanding Collaborative Pianist” at the Peabody Institute and received the Clara Ascherfeld Award in Accompanying. He was subsequently invited\, alongside fellow Peabody musicians\, to appear at Carnegie Hall’s Master Class Series in collaboration with Ludwig Quandt of the Berliner Philharmoniker\, and in 2024 participated in the Puccini Concert Project at NYU Casa Italiana\, presented in partnership with the Festival Puccini Torre del Lago. \nSince 2023\, Junwen has established himself as a distinctive recital voice\, presenting more than 35 performances during the 2024/25 season across North America and China. He has appeared in prominent series including Arts Club of Washington\, Sunday Recital Series at Saint Thomas (New York)\, Trinity Concert Series\, Sevenars Music Festival\, Fripp Island Friends of Music\, Saugerties Pro Musica\, Chamber On The Mountain\, and Boston Court Pasadena\, alongside university residencies throughout the United States and China. The 2025/26 season brings engagements across the United States as well as international debuts in France\, Canada\, and China. His debut EP Colombine\, featuring works by Amy Beach and Florence Price\, was released in May 2026 through the California-based Manus imprint and is available on major digital streaming platforms worldwide. He is also currently preparing his debut full-length album with Sheva Collection in collaboration with Naxos of America\, Inc. \nA recent graduate of the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University\, where he studied with Richard Goode\, Junwen is based in Philadelphia and teaches piano and chamber music at the University of Pennsylvania. He is represented worldwide by Price Attractions.
