SUMMARY:Miki Aoki / Piano Recital
DESCRIPTION:Including works by Bach/Busoni\, Berio\, Janacek and Florence Price. \nPraised for “genuinely memorable performance” by BBC Music Magazine\, pianist Miki Aoki is widely recognized for her diverse abilities as a pianist and collaborative artist. \nMs. Aoki records exclusively for German Label Hänssler Profil. Her debut album\, comprised of the piano works of Zoltan Kodaly\, was released in the fall of 2011 and won critical acclaim. Her second CD\, ‘The Belyayev Project’\, features fascinating compositions varying from solo piano works by Liadow\, Glazunov and Blumenfeld to the expressive and rhapsodic piano Trio by Rimsky-Korsakov. It was released in 2013. The Fanfare Magazine praised ‘The Belyayev Project’ as a “graceful\, expressive and transparent performance”\, and The Ensemble Magazine (Germany) wrote\, “…pianist Miki Aoki interprets magically.” Her third CD\, ‘Mélancolie’\, was released in May 2016 and was awarded a special prize by the Japanese music magazine “Record Geijutsu”. ‘Tokyo Story’\, was released in 2018. This recording is a world-premiere\, featuring music from the films of Yasujiro Ozu in their original piano manuscript versions and has enjoyed an especially enthusiastic reception from the Japanese media. \nA frequent guest artist in prestigious concert series and festivals around the world\, Ms. Aoki made her debut at age of 12 at the Royal Festival Hall in London’s South Bank Centre as a soloist with the National Symphony Orchestra. Her performances have been broadcasted on NDR-North German Radio\, RBB- Radio Berlin\, Brandenburg\, BR Classics\, WDR\, Hessischer Rundfunk\, Radio Suisse Romande\, ORF Austria\, Radio France\, 98.7 WFMT Chicago\, MPR Classic and ABC Classic FM Australia and BBC Radio 3. \nAs a collaborative pianist Ms. Aoki has been employed by the Heifetz International Music Institute\, The Perlman Music Program\, International Summer Academy Mozarteum Salzburg\, Mattheiser Sommer-Akademie\, and International Violin Masterclasses at Kronberg Academy. In 2021 she served as the official accompanist for the Joseph Joachim International Violin Competition in Germany. She served the same role for the Tokyo International Viola Competition in May 2022. \nMs. Aoki regularly plays for lessons and masterclasses of internationally renowned musicians including Yuri Bashmet\, Christoph Eschenbach\, Christian Tetzlaff\, Maxim Vengerov and Tabea Zimmermann. Since 2009 Ms. Aoki has been engaged by the prestigious Kronberg Academy in Germany where she works with exceptionally talented young performers. \nMs. Aoki started playing the piano at age 4 and moved to London at age 9 where she joined the Purcell School of Music. She holds degrees from SUNY Stony Brook University (DMA)\, Yale University (MM) and Indiana University (BM). She graduated with a distinction in the Konzertexamen degree at Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg. (Mit Auszeichnung). Ms. Aoki was a full-time Senior Lecturer at Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Graz between 2012-2016. \nUpon starting her new role as Assistant Professor of Collaborative Piano at Arizona State University for the 2022 fall semester\, Ms. Aoki relocated from New York City where she spent five years under the tutelage of Gilbert Kalish and graduated with her DMA degree from SUNY Stony Brook in May of 2022. \nMs. Aoki held a teaching assistant position for the undergraduate piano department at SUNY since 2017 and a staff pianist position at the Juilliard School from 2019. During Winter term 2021-2022 she taught as a sabbatical replacement piano professor at Lawrence University Conservatory of Music. \nDuring the pandemic\, Ms. Aoki founded and launched the virtual concert series\, ‘Musik in the Air’. All programs are woven together uniquely by Ms. Aoki\, and each has a theme; each in addition to the mission of ‘Musik in the Air’ which is to bring a world-class concert experience to listeners wherever they may be.

SUMMARY:Derrick Bounds & dB Group
DESCRIPTION:A native Chicagoan\, growing up on the West and NW sides of Chicago listening to everything from James Brown to Rachmaninoff\, Derrick Bounds begin studying the piano at age 11\, at “Dorolyn Academy of Music” in Oak Park\, IL (founded by Derrick’s aunt\, Dorothy Bounds in 1982)\, studying privately for 12 consecutive years under Ms Juanita Calermee. Later studying with various pianists including Alan Swain of Evanston\, IL and Kevin Gainer in Waukegan\, IL. and more recently at the Chicago Conservatory of Music studying Advanced Classical with Michael Ruiz where Derrick is in preparation for a solo piano Classical and Jazz Recital. Derrick began playing in church during his teens as well as playing in the Wilbur Wright College Jazz Big Band. Later graduating from DePaul University\, studying Computer Science and Music\, he has been giggin’ around town and out of state since. \nPlaying piano/keyboards behind live stage performances at Chicago’s famed “Black Ensemble Theater” for 10 years gave Derrick unmeasurable experience playing in the music ensemble setting. Developing a range of music genres to include Jazz\, Classical\, Ragtime\, Pop\, Gospel\, Blues…. Composing\, producing and performing is what he enjoys most\, hence ultimately turning toward music full time after the IT position was out-sourced. In addition to Chicago\, Derrick has accompanied artists in Michigan\, New York and North Carolina. Locally\, he can be seen playing solo piano at the Chicago Chop House in the River North Neighborhood. Derrick’s original music can be heard on internet radio world wide as well as his YouTube channel derrickboundsmusic hosting vlogs on various historic music sites. \n“dB Group” (Decibel Group)\, let by Derrick consists of 6 – 10 members which includes a 3-piece string section when appropriate\, formed in 2016 to produce Derrick’s original compositions. The core group consists of a rhythm section\, a horn\, and 2 background vocalists. The performance of “Derrick Bounds and Decibel Group” can be described as excitingly eclectic. In addition to original compositions\, a selection during a performance can go back centuries\, with Derrick dressed in full Renaissance attire while performing a Bach Prelude performed by this ensemble. Since the time of its formation\, dB Group has performed at “Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts” located on the University of Chicago Campus and twice at “Mayne Stage” in Rogers Park.

SUMMARY:Classical Musical Treasures from Mexico and the United States
DESCRIPTION:These two artists\, with outstanding international careers\, combine their talents\, and the musical culture of the United States and Mexico\, thus consolidating the ties that unite these two countries. This concert brings them together to perform a musical repertoire to celebrate the neighborly relationship of these two countries\, and includes Mexican and North American music. Although they grew up in different environments\, the two artists share the same roots\, united today to express themselves through the universal language of music. \nThe program includes excellent samples from the world concert scene. It is a careful selection that is accessible to all audiences. They show the syncretism between concert music and the folklore of both countries. \nThe repertoire includes internationally recognized North American and Mexican composers. Souvenirs Op 28 by Samuel Barber is an example of musical styles from the first half of the 20th century in the United States. George Gershwin integrates jazz with the orchestra; Rhapsody in Blue is one of the most iconic American piano concertos. \nJuventino Rosas\, combines the European musical style of the late 19th century with the roots of Mexican music. The fusion of folkloric and concert music finds its maximum exponent in José Pablo Moncayo. “Huapango” interweaves popular Veracruz themes in an exquisite and original work. Mexicans often consider it as a “second national anthem”. \n  \nProgram \nUnited States \nSouvenirs op. 28 by Samuel Barber (1910)\nRhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin (1898) \nMexico \nSobre las Olas by Juventino Rosas (1868)\nHuapango by José Pablo Moncayo (1912) \nDuration: 50 minutes \n  \nSarai Buchanan Arellano\nThe United States \n“Lovely\, warm tone and great sensitivity… thoughtful and fine musician.” Alison Deane\, piano professor\, Cuny the city college of NY. \nTalented and experienced Mexican-American pianist Sarai Buchanan Arellano has been recognized for her “great sensitivity” and “abundant technique” by (Alison Deane\, a piano professor at CUNY and T.Zoells\, Pianoforte Chicago). \nShe has performed in various places throughout the United States\, including the Johann Sebastian Bach Society of Louisville Kentucky and the Merkin and Shephard halls in New York. \nSarai has done important work as a chamber artist. Testimony to this is the presentation of Brahms’ Piano Quintet at the First Presbyterian Church in Westchester\, New York\, as well as with various chamber groups performing concerts at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music in New York and Pianoforte Hall in Chicago. She also presented Brahms’ Piano Quartet in Cremona\, Italy as part of the International Musical Festival and Academy of Cremona. \nHer extensive career includes international festivals in Europe such as the Regensburg Festival in Germany\, the Orfeo Musical Festival in Vipiteno\, Italy and the American Fine Arts Festival in the Republic of Georgia. \nSarai founded and presented the Duo Terra in concert with Russian pianist Olga Ridgway. Together they have performed in the United States and Europe\, in Italy and the Republic of Georgia. \nIn 2022\, she participated in the project “Women in Music: Muses and Performers” with soprano Sindy Gutiérrez\, presenting a tour of Chicago\, Illinois and Magical Towns in the state of Guanajuato\, Mexico. \nBorned in West Virginia\, she began her piano at the Merit School of Music in Chicago. She graduated from the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University where she studied under Graham Scott and Kuang Hao Huang. \nShe earned her master’s degree in piano at The City College of New York with Alison Deane\, graduating with honors\, and specialized in the Suzuki pedagogical method for early childhood at the School of Strings in New York. \nShe complemented her training by studying at Kaufman Music Center -and in private classes- with the great Belarusian pianist and pedagogue Genya Paley in Manhattan as well as in master classes with Natsuki Fujiwara in Italy. \nThroughout her career\, Sarai has been recognized as a “nascent Mexican-American pianist” by Colorado Press and selected as one of the “40 prominent Latinos/Latinas in New York under 40” by Negocios Now. \nIn the academic field\, Sarai was part of the faculty at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music and at the Westchester Conservatory of Music in White Plains\, New York. Sarai Buchanan Arellano continues her activity as a concert pianist\, which she combines with giving private lessons. One of her principles is to transmit to the new generations of pianists the love for the study of music. \n  \nLuis Herman\nMexico \nWith over 300 concerts in Europe and America\, in recent years Luis Herman has established himself\, representing Mexico on major stages around the world. Luis Herman has performed as a soloist with symphony orchestras such as those of San Luis Potosí\, Michoacán\, Oaxaca\, the University of Guanajuato\, and the Symphony Band of the State of Guanajuato. \nLuis has participated in the International Cervantino Festival\, Zacatecas International Festival\, Baja California October Festival\, Durango Revueltas Festival\, Texas State International Piano Festival\, Ale Meksyk Festival in Poland\, and the Festival of Nations in Rome\, among others. \nLuis Herman has represented Mexico on major stages around the world\, including the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles\, United States\, Spain\, Italy\, Poland (Fryderyk Chopin Concert Hall and Chopin Salon)\, and Hungary. \nHe has premiered and recorded recently composed orchestral works by composers such as Juan Trigos\, Nicolás Prada (Colombia)\, Carlos Vidaurri\, Jesús Villaseñor\, and Alex Ruanova\, among others. \nIn 2015\, Luis created the Cervantes Duo and the Meksyk Duo as part of the commemoration of the 400th death anniversary of the writer Miguel de Cervantes\, where he achieved a literary-musical fusion with Cervantes-themed performances\, offering more than 50 concerts in Poland\, Spain\, and Mexico. \nHe graduated with “Laureate Degree” in Music from the University of Guanajuato. In 2018\, he completed his postgraduate studies in Europe at the Frederic Chopin University of Music in Warsaw\, Poland\, under the guidance of professors Ramiro Sanjinés and Jersy Romaniuk. \nHe received masterclasses from François Chaplin at Texas University\, Barry Snyder (winner of the Van Cliburn prize)\, Jorge Federico Osorio\, José Miramontes\, Alla Von Buch\, and Cyprien Katsaris. \nFor his outstanding career and commitment to his state\, Guanajuato has recognized by awarding him the “Artista Orgullo Festival Internacional Cervantino 2015” medal. SUMMARY:Stephan Möller / Beethoven 32x32
DESCRIPTION:This concert is part of a four day concert series. There will be a different program each night as Stephan plays through all 32 Beethoven piano sonatas.  \n  \nIn December 2020\, the musical world would have celebrated Ludwig van Beethoven’s 250th anniversary. Due to the pandemic\, almost all events of the big celebration were cancelled. \nIn my repertoire\, Beethoven has always played a central role. I have performed his 32 piano sonatas\, the “New Testament of the Piano Repertoire” (Hans von Bülow)\, frequently in complete cycles over the last 28 years. The first two of these performances\, in Vienna and Bremen\, have taken place in 1994; the latest one at the Vienna Musikverein in 2021. Over time\, the temporal duration of these cycles has been compressed\, from the initial two months to just two days! \nOn the occasion of the 2020 anniversary\, I had planned a special concert event worldwide\, featuring Beethoven’s 32 piano sonatas\, the achievement of the lifetime of a genius\, in the most compact shape\, so the audience would have the opportunity to receive this important chapter of music history in the shortest possible time. This would be in four concerts of 2.5 hours each! These four concerts could be happening in two\, three or four days. \nThe “American episode” of these concerts was scheduled for September and October\, 2020. Starting in Lima\, Peru\, Quito\, Ecuador and Monterrey\, Mexico\, performances in seven cities of the US had been secured: New York (Carnegie Hall)\, Princeton NJ\, Chicago IL\, Albuquerque NM\, Jewell IA\, Knoxville TN and Denver CO would have taken place. A sequence of European performances were about to follow: Vienna (Musikverein)\, Hamburg\, Bremen\, Cologne\, Basel\, Romania\, Albania and Kosovo were on the list. The Asian series (Japan\, Taiwan\, Vietnam\, and Malaysia) would have concluded that year\, and for spring 2021 a tour to Australia had been projected\, as well as one performance in South Africa. With a voice as noticeably (as Terry puts it) “ranks with all of the greats\,” it won’t be long. \nOver the course of a multi-faceted career spanning just a little under 3 decades\, Thimes is no stranger to the music world\, growing up in a home surrounded by all types of music from her father & radio icon\, the late Lou “Fatha” Thimes. \nThimes has performed with such jazz notables as Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra\,(St. Louis\, MO) the late Clark Terry(The Blue Note-NY)\, Dr. Billy Taylor\, Earl May\, Benny Powell\,(Flushing Town Hall) and James Moody(Blue Note-NY). She has also graced the stage with the likes of Houston Person\, Jimmy&Tootie Heath\, Bobby McFerrin\, and Bucky Pizzarelli. \nIn recent years she has appeared and toured Paris with David Sanborn\, sung for the Queen of Thailand(Mandarin Oriental Hotel)\, Queen Elizabeth II(British Embassy-Washington D.C. (during her 2009 visit to the U.S)\, President George W Bush(White House 2007)\, and was hand picked by the Queen of Soul(Aretha Franklin) to perform for her 72nd birthday celebration ( 2015-Ritz Carlton\, NY). \nMost say that her acting is just as great as her singing and founding director Ron Himes of the St Louis Black Repertory would agree. Thimes has received 8 Woodie Awards( named after Freedom Theatre Founder-Woody King-NY) for her roles as lead and supporting for acting\, and musical performances. \nAlthough a native of St Louis\, MO Thimes\, has recently became a resident of Chicago IL\, where she can be seen at Winter’s jazz club downtown Chicago. \nWhen Denise is not performing\, Thimes wears another hat and is equally passionate as Founder & Executive Director of the Mildred Thimes Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research.(named after Thimes mother). II \n  \nSonata (1926) by Bela Bartok (1881-1945) \nAllegro moderato \nSostenuto e pesante \nAllegro molto \n  \nBallade #2 in F major\, op. 38 (1839) by Frederic Chopin (1810-1849) \nAndantino\, Presto con fuoco \n  \nProgram Notes: \nHeitor Villa-Lobos wrote two suites with the title Próle do Bébé. The set presented here is from the first suite which he wrote for his wife. They are full of childlike charm and simplicity and were championed by the pianist Artur Rubinstein. \nJohann Sebastian Bach originally paired the Prelude in G major with a fughetto in his set of Little Preludes and Fugues. However\, he ultimately separated this prelude\, however\, realizing that it was a gem worth standing alone. It is a prelude rich with lyricism and delicate syncopations. All the preludes of the Well-tempered Clavier\, I also feel\, can stand alone and hold their own. The Prelude in F# minor is an eloquently songful air. While the Prelude in G minor contains the dramatic character of an Overture\, the fabric of the Prelude in F major is woven with resplendent choral textures. \nWritten the same year as Piano Concerto No. 1 and Out of Doors Suite for his concert tours\, the Sonata by Bela Bartok exploits the potentialities of percussive pianism\, primal rhythms and peasant-like melodies. The first movement is a dance with a motor driven rhythm. The static harmonies and inert melodies of the second movement depict a stark\, bleak\, desolate landscape. The third movement\, set in a kind of rondovariation form\, has the most ethnic flavor combining folk-like melodies and rhythms with percussive modernism. \nFrederic Chopin’s Ballade #2 in F major tells a tale of tenderness and turmoil. A lovely tranquil theme proceeds only to be interrupted by an eruption of fury. In the eye of the storm that has just precipitated the main theme is developed only to rise to an even more frenzied climax ending with but a wind blown whisper of the opening theme. \n-M.V \n  \nBiography: \nMark Valenti received his Master of Music from Northwestern University\, Bachelor of Music from the Philadelphia Musical Academy and has studied with such notable teachers as Benjamin Whitten\, Zoltan Kocsis and Mary Sauer. In addition to giving solo recitals in cities throughout the U.S.\, Mr. Valenti has performed in France\, Belgium\, Hungary and Luxembourg as well as for former First Lady Barbara Bush in Washington\, D.C. \nMark Valenti has performed in recital live on WFMT classical radio. He has also done extensive work in the Jazz field including performances with Gregory Hines\, Frank Foster and Al Grey and has appeared on television with Joe Sudler’s Swing Machine and singer/actor Christopher Durham. \nFormerly Professor of Music at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia\, Xavier University in Chicago and the Loire Valley Music Institute in France\, Mr. Valenti currently teaches at his studio in the Lakeview neighborhood of Chicago and is available for lessons for all levels and all styles.

Garnering critical acclaim for his debut at the Lyric Opera of Chicago in Rigoletto\, the Chicago Sun-Times reported\, “There were wild cheers for Andrea Silvestrelli …who brought a terrifying\, sepulchral\,tone to the assassin Sparafucile.” The Chicago Sun concurred\, “Andrea Silvestrelli wielded a big\, black\, menacing bass in his debut as the assassin Sparafucile.” \nHis featured performances include : Hagen in Götterdämmerung in a return to the Taichung National Theater in Taiwan\, Grand Inquisitor in Don Carlo with the Dallas Opera and Sparafucile in Rigoletto with Opera San Antonio; he was Fafner in Siegfried in Taiwan\, and Geronte in Manon Lescaut and Pistola in Falstaff with the Dallas Opera. In the 2017-2018 season\, Mr. Silvestrelli was heard as Hunding in Die Walküre in Taiwan\, returned to Lyric Opera of Chicago as Nourabad in Les pêcheurs de perles and Timur in Turandot\, and sang the Grand Inquisitor in Don Carlo with Washington National Opera. In spring 2018\, he performed in San Francisco Opera’s Ring Cycle as Fasolt in Das Rheingold and Hagen in Götterdämmerung. \nMr. Silvestrelli’s performances in the 2016-2017 season included Fafner in Das Rheingold with National Taichung Theater\, Oroveso in Norma with Lyric Opera of Chicago\, Hagen in Götterdämmerung with Houston Grand Opera\, and the Commendatore in Don Giovanni and Sparafucile in Rigoletto\, both with San Francisco Opera. With SFO in 2015-2016\, he sang the role of Wurm in Luisa Miller\, The Night Watchman in Die Meistersinger von Nürnburg\, Don Basilio in Il barbiere di Siviglia\, and the Grand Inquisitor in Don Carlo. He also returned to Erl\, Austria for performances of the Ring Cycle at the Tiroler Festspiele. \nLast season\, 2021-2022 Mr. Silvestrelli performed Filippo Secondo in Don Carlo\, and Banco in Macbeth with Maryland Lyric Opera; Il PiccoloMarat in Teatro Goldoni\, Livorno\, Italy. \nThe current season\, 2023-2024 opens with collaboration with Opera Festival Chicago — Mr. Silvestrelli will be singing Attila and also 4th Temptation in Pizzetti’s Assassinio nella Cattedrale\, followed by Hagen in Gottedammerung with Opera Australia\, Brisbane. \n  \nIrina Feoktistova (pianist)\, graduated from St. Petersburg Conservatoire\, Russia. A classically trained pianist\, she has toured Russia\, Europe\, and the United States as a soloist\, duo pianist\, accompanist\, her collaborations include the world’s foremost performer of Baroque trumpet\, Crispian Steele-Perkins\, and most recently internationally acclaimed Italian singer Andrea Silvestrelli. As a duo pianist\, she won third prize at the First International Competition of Contemporary Music Interpretation in Weimar\, Germany (1996) and was chosen to perform at Purcell Room in London for the Park Lane Group Young Artists Concert Series. As a piano soloist\, she won the Kawai CD Recording Competition in 2004. \nMs. Feoktistova relocated to the United States in 1998\, and since then she has performed extensively in the Chicagoland area. She has been involved in numerous musical theater productions as an accompanist and music director. She is also active in various projects performing Russian and American contemporary music. She was affiliated with CUBE\, VOX 3 and MAVerick Ensembles in Chicago and the Union of Composers in St. Petersburg\, where she performed a program of American contemporary music at the international festival St. Petersburg Musical Spring in May of 2005. She was the Principal Keyboardist with Millennium Chamber Players (Chicago based ensemble). Irina made her Carnegie Hall debut as a soloist and an accompanist with Russian singer Vladimir Galouzine for The Russia Day concert on June 12th\, 2008. \nMrs. Feoktistova was an assistant conductor for the Lyric Opera production of Musorgsky “Boris Godunov” in 2011-2012 season. 2015/16 Performed as a piano soloist Schostakovich Piano Concerto N2 and Beethoven Triple Concerto with Lake Veiw Orchestra 2017/18 season Worked at the CSO on the production of Prokofiev’s “Ivan the Terrible” as a Russian coach with Gerard Depardieu and Chicago Children Choir. \nIn 2018/19 season she worked on the production of Iolanta by Tchaykovsky at the Chicago Opera Theater. In 2019/20 season took part in COT production of Rahmaninov’s Aleko and\nLyric Opera production of Tchaykovsky’s Queen of Spades. 2018 till present She is affiliated with the Appolo Chorus of Chicago and Chicago Children Choir.\nShe is on faculty of Northwestern University and Ryan Center of Lyric Opera of Chicago. In Summer 2020 she started new project “Colors in Music” with visual artist\nEvgenia Pirshina. In 2021 the duo won the 2nd prise for the presentation and live performance of Scriabin’s Poem “Vers La Flamme” with color animations for the International Performing Arts Competition “Stars of the Albion.Grand Prix 2021” (London\, UK). Acclaimed for her remarkable intensity of expression\, she is a laureate in international competitions including the Concours Ile-de-France\, Concours Musical de France\, Artist Presentation Society Competition (USA)\, Paderewski International Competition (USA)\, Krystian Tkaczewski International Piano Competition (Poland)\, Bradshaw & Buono International Competition\, and New York Piano Festival & Competition. In addition\, she was awarded the “Chopin Performance Prize” by the President of the Association of Polish Artists & Musicians in France\, and the “Debussy Special Prize” from both the IBLA Foundation and the Metropolitan International Piano Competition. In 2011\, she received a generous sponsor from the Edifier Musician Foundation (Beijing). \nThese honors have brought her to perform at distinguished venues\, including the Carnegie Hall\, Steinway Hall (NYC)\, Viennese Hall (Salzburg)\, Bibliotheque Polonaise de Paris\, Vouleftikon – First Parliament of Greece\, National Centre for the Performing Arts (Beijing)\, Beijing Concert Hall\, and Shanghai Oriental Arts Center. A passionate chamber musician\, her duet and trio groups have made appearances in Pablo Casals Chamber Music Festival\, Musical Odyssey\, and Shanghai Chamber Music Festival. \nChenxing holds an Artist Diploma and a Master of Music degree from Yale University\, and she is completing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Northwestern University on a full scholarship. She has worked with world-renowned artists including Chen Jiang\, Fou Ts’ong\, Hung-Kuan Chen\, Peter Frankl\, Alan Chow\, Boris Slutsky\, and Eduardus Halim. \nChenxing spent her formative years on the beautiful South Chinese island of “Gulangyu\,” known as a “music island.” It was where she discovered her passion for classical music. She is the founder of an international fundraising endeavor that raises funds and awareness for homeless animals through performing benefit recitals. SUMMARY:The Orion Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:To conclude its 30th anniversary season\, The Orion Ensemble expands its instrumental lineup and welcomes five exceptional guest musicians for a “Schubertiad\,” celebrating the work of Franz Schubert (1797–1828). Performances take place at three venues: New England Congregational Church in Aurora (May 14)\, PianoForte Studios in Chicago (May 17) and Nichols Concert Hall in Evanston (May 21). The Chicago and Evanston performances also will be available via livestream. \nThe program includes Schubert’s Octet in F Major for two violins\, viola\, cello\, bass\, clarinet\, bassoon and French horn. This work\, originally commissioned by Austrian philanthropist and amateur clarinetist Ferdinand Troyer\, is in six movements and features elegance\, luminous expression and profound originality. The first movement brims with lyrical energy\, while the second features lilting strings and a clarinet theme akin to Mozart. The third movement brings unbridled\, rustic joy. The fourth movement is a charming set of variations\, the fifth an elegant and sweetly lyrical minuet\, and the finale a grand symphonic venture in miniature. \nJoining Orion musicians Florentina Ramniceanu (violin)\, Judy Stone (cello) and Kathryne Pirtle (clarinet) for the Octet are Mathias Tacke (violin)\, previously second violinist of the Vermeer Quartet; frequent Orion guest artist and chamber musician Stephen Boe (viola); Robert Kassinger (bass) of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra; Andrei Muravev (bassoon) of the Chicago Sinfonietta; and Gregory Flint (horn)\, principal with the Elgin Symphony Orchestra. Composing more than 500 songs\, Schubert expanded the horizons of this intimate vocal artistry\, increasing the piano’s role from accompanist to equal partner with the vocalist and evoking imagery through harmonies\, counter themes and colorful rhythms to bring the art song to new heights of expression. Daniel Baer has taught at the Eastman School of Music\, the Eastman Community Music School\, and Syracuse University.
