SUMMARY:Peruvian Music in the 1800's
DESCRIPTION:Voice\, Piano and Guitar Recital \nRafael Vivanco started playing the guitar at the age of 11 in Peru. He went on to complete his Bachelor of Music degree in classical guitar performance at the University of British Columbia in Canada\, and his Master’s at Roosevelt University in Chicago. Rafael was sponsored to perform and teach in the US for over 10 years by Jim Scoglieti of Sherry Brener\, the Spanish guitar importer and Guitarra Magazine editor that collaborated with icons such as Andres Segovia. Rafael has performed in the Chicago Latino Music Festival\, the Chicago Flamenco Festival\, the Latin American Guitar Festival of Chicago\, the Milwaukee International Guitar Festival\, among others\, and his performances have been broadcast on public radio. In 2017 he was artist in residence at the Cervantes Institute of Chicago. Currently Rafael has been producing live events that incorporate music\, dance and poetry.\n \nSarah Loisch began her musical studies at an early age alongside her six older siblings. The family’s active involvement in vocal and instrumental learning led to performances across the state of Indiana. Upon discovering a deep connection to piano literature\, she committed to full-time musical studies and was an active collaborator and performer with orchestras and ensembles throughout her undergraduate and graduate studies. After completing her MA in Piano at Eastern Illinois University studying under Dr. Victor Cayres\, Miss Loisch traveled to Crete and Italy to pursue further instruction and collaboration with musicians and teachers such as Thomas Pandolfi and Constantinos Papadakis.  As a performer\, Miss Loisch seeks to express the intersection of life and music in her work. In addition to her performance endeavors\, she maintains a private teaching studio where she believes technique and musicianship work together to foster a greater appreciation and love for the art of music. Sarah Loisch studied with Paul Kenyon during her BA in Music program at Olivet Nazarene University. Throughout her studies\, she has made multiple concerto appearances performing works by Chopin\, Rachmaninoff\, Mendelssohn\, and Saint-Saens. \nJillian Krickl began her choral singing career while she was an undergraduate at The University of Chicago. She has been a member of Holy Name Cathedral’s all-professional Schola Cantorum Cathedralis since graduation. She also performs locally and nationally with acclaimed groups as both a soloist and backup singer. Most recently Jillian was featured as the vocal soloist performing Gregorian chants corresponding to select movements from Charles Tournemire’s L’Orgue Mystique Op. 57\, performed by Stephen Tharp. Recent backup singing engagements include Sarah Brightman’s 2021 “Christmas Symphony” concert at the Auditorium Theatre and Josh Groban’s 2022 Harmony Tour concert at the Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre. When she is not singing\, Jillian also enjoys travel\, hiking\, and “Better Call Saul” fandom.

Vão-se os anos (The years gone by…)\n2. Se eu soubesse ao ver o dia (Had I known when I saw the day…)\n3. Olho\, atento\, o céu imenso (Intently\, watching\, the immense sky…) \n*Denotes world premiere \n\nProgram Notes \nSaudade was inspired by the Portuguese maritime discoveries of the 15th and 16th centuries\,  and by saudade\, the intense longing felt by both sailors and the loved ones left behind. \nNewly Commissioned Portuguese Songs for Mezzo-Soprano and Piano\nThe themes of love\, longing\, motherhood\, separation\, and nature—intangible and ephemeral  elements of all human existence—pervade the work of Portuguese poet Yvette K. Centeno.  Yara Ensemble commissioned contemporary Portuguese composers Fátima Fonte\, Francisco  Fontes\, Sara Ross\, and Sofia Sousa Rocha to write works based on Centeno’s poems. The world  premiere was originally scheduled to take place in 2020\, but due to the Covid19 pandemic\, the  first performance of the works suffered numerous delays. We are thrilled to finally bring these  works to the public at PianoForte Chicago\, as they offer a unique opportunity to encourage and  disseminate the work of a new generation of Portuguese composers. \nAppalachian Nursery Rhymes\nI was thrilled when Yara Ensemble asked me to write a piece for them. And I was even more thrilled  when they had text already chosen – the delightful Appalachian Nursery Rhymes. These charming and  quirky versions of well-known rhymes were a lot of fun to play with and working with the ensemble has  been a dream come true! -Jay Batzner \nTrovas de Coimbra\nBetween the 12th and 14th centuries\, the art of troubadours flourished throughout Europe. The  medieval Portuguese city of Coimbra\, home to one of Europe’s oldest universities\, soon became  a vibrant cultural center where artists\, musicians\, and poets gathered. The poetry of trovas addressed the quintessential themes of platonic and unrequited love and saudade (longing).  The trova writing tradition in Portugal has survived the passing of time and is still prevalent in  today’s Coimbra. Poet A. Gonçalves Cunha (1902-1986) wrote Trovas de Coimbra in the 1930s.  Given my Portuguese heritage\, the theme of saudade resonated with me deeply\, thus inspiring  me to set three of Cunha’s trovas for mezzo-soprano and piano. – Alexandra Mascolo-David \n\nAbout the Program\nYara Ensemble (Alexandra Mascolo-David\, piano; Sarah Stone\, mezzo-soprano; Annette Thornton\, stage director) is excited to return to Piano Forte and present their new program entitled “Across Frontiers: Our Lives\, Our Stories.” We open with our signature piano solo\, “Saudade\,” composed and played by Alexandra Mascolo-David. “Saudade” – meaning “longing” — is inspired by 16 th and 17 th century Portuguese women waiting for their husbands to return from New World sea voyages. We then travel first in time\, with the World Premiere of newly commissioned works for piano and mezzo-soprano by contemporary Portuguese composers Fátima Fonte\, Francisco Fontes\, Sara Ross\, and Sofia Sousa Rocha with poetry by Yvette Centeno\, and then across the ocean\, with six “Appalachian Nursery Rhymes” set to piano and mezzo-soprano by American composer Jay Batzner. The program concludes with three “Trovas de Coimbra” for mezzo-soprano and piano\, composed by Mascolo-David. Yara Ensemble continues to create an immersive environment in which the audience experiences a journey of cultural exploration and understanding through music\, storytelling\, and poetry. \nBiography \nAlso spelled Iara or Uira\, theYara is a creature of native Brazilian mythology. She is often represented as a water nymph\, siren\, or mermaid—one of the forms commonly attributed to Brazilian orixá Yemanjá\, the goddess of the seas. Yara is the beautiful young woman associated with a body of fresh water\, with fair skin and green\, seaweed-like hair\, who occasionally could be found sitting on a rock combing her hair or basking in the sun. The song of the Yara is believed to be irresistible to men who\, once under her spell\, are lured to the waters’ depths to live with the siren forever. \nYara Ensemble is an exciting and unique collaboration between Portuguese-Italian-American pianist Alexandra Mascolo-David and Brazilian-British-American mezzo-soprano Sarah Stone. With direction by Annette Thornton\, Yara Ensemble performances weave music\, movement\, and art into an intimate and accessible narrative journey designed for 21st century audiences. Our goal is to create an immersive performance experience where the audience is engaged in the act of discovery. Entertaining while educating is at the core of the ensemble’s mission.Yara Ensemble’s repertoire focus on music of the Iberian peninsula and the Americas\, with an emphasis on newly commissioned woks by composers of the newer generation. SUMMARY:Inferno 1911
DESCRIPTION:The Italian Cultural Institute of Chicago presents a CineConcert featuring the groundbreaking 1911 silent film L’Inferno\, accompanied live by Stefano Maccagno (piano) and Furio Di Castri (double bass) on the mesmerizing musical score composed by Maestro Maccagno. \n\nL’Inferno is a 1911 Italian silent film\, loosely adapted from the first canticle of Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy. The movie took over three years to make\, and was the first full-length Italian feature film ever produced. L’Inferno’s depictions of Hell closely followed those in the engravings of Gustave Doré for an edition of the Divine Comedy\, which were familiar to an international audience. The movie production also employed several special effects\, some of which were considered groundbreaking at the time\, establishing the movie as a leader in innovation of cinematic techniques. \nThe concept of “musical accompaniment” for the film L’Inferno is a transverse musical process that fosters a timbric osmosis of a predominantly electronic track and live performances on double bass and piano. The designed absence of specific languages allows the musical selections and genres to be freely defined by the images themselves\, the absolute protagonists of the project\, creating an oftentimes surreal experience. The combination of electronic and live music transports the listener to atmospheres at times impalpable\, as the timbric density undergoes rarefaction\, and at times to “magmatic musical” situations\, in which the full multiplicity of sounds coexist in an orchestral sum of timbric material. Free improvisation performed live on the double bass and piano defines the soundtrack\, allowing the instruments to dialogue with one another in a purity of language that ranges from Jazz to classical-contemporary music. \n\nStefano Maccagno. Pianist\, composer\, conductor\, professor of improvisation\, orchestration\, composition and orchestration of music for images. He is the official composer of the National Cinema Museum of Turin\, for which he has composed and orchestrated the music for numerous silent cinema masterpieces including Cabiria\, Royal Tiger\, Maciste\, The Whispering Chorus\, Blood and Sand. He has collaborated as soundtrack composer with the “Italian National Film Archive” in Milan. He has been pianist accompanist of the biggest masterpieces of silent cinema at Cannes Film Festival\, Bologna international film festival Il Cinema Ritrovato\, Lumiere Festival in Lyon Pordenone Silent Film Days\, Cinémathèque Française and Tokyo National Film Center. On commission of the Teatro dell’Opera di Florence he wrote a composition for a large symphony orchestra on music by Led Zeppelin performed by the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Orchestra\, which he directed himself at the Teatro dell’Opera in Florence. He has composed the music score for Susanna Nicchiarelli’s “Nico\, 1988”\, recording with actress Trine Dirholm (best actress award at Berlinale 2017). He is the official pianist of the Cabiria restoration project\, which has accompanied at Cannes and Berlin film festivals as well as in Belgrade\, Budapest\, Lyon\, Luxembourg\, Madrid\, Sao Paulo\, Seoul\, Tokyo\, Vancouver. \nFurio Di Castri. SUMMARY:Helene Papadopoulos: the Goldberg Variations
DESCRIPTION:Hélène Papadopoulos is a pianist with a complex and highly sensitive personality. She is a searching artist who seeks deep insight into the music and into the art of piano playing. For her there is no detail that is too small to be part of the global conception of a work. Never sacrificing details\, never abandoning the big line to reveal musical subtleties in a natural manner. \nHélène Papadopoulos was born in Paris\, France. She started studying the piano at the Conservatoire de Strasbourg. In the class of Amy Lin\, she received her Concert Diploma with highest honours before moving back to Paris to join École Normale de Musique Cortot where she studied with Jean-Marc Luisada. \nSince her early studies\, she has developed a particular interest into J. S. Bach’s music. She was initiated in the baroque repertoire and in its art of playing as she also studied the harpsichord with Aline Zylberajch during her years in Strasbourg. Hélène Papadopoulos has a restless intellect and is always looking for new knowledge and sources of inspiration. She has published a commented edition of Leonhard Euler’s (1707-1783) complete works on music theory. \nHélène Papadopoulos has attended masterclasses by Sergueï Maltsev\, Jean-Jacques Dünki\, Charles Rosen among others. She has been granted scholarships from the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena\, Italy\, where she studied both the piano with Michele Campanella and chamber music with the ensemble Trio di Trieste. She has recorded Mozart’s sonata K380 for piano and violin. With an eclectic repertoire she has been invited to play in various festivals in Europe (contemporary music festival Musica\, Musica Festival in Strasbourg\, Siena Music Festival\, Paliesiaus Dvaras…) and plays both as a soloist and chamber musician in Europe and North America. \nHélène is currently developing the Clavier-Übung Project\, on which she has been working for several years. She started by performing the Goldberg Variations in 2015. From the 2019-2020 season\, she will be playing all J. S. Bach’s Clavier-Übungen in series of four recitals spanning over one year: Partitas No. 1\, 2\, and 4 (Clavier-Übung I)\, Partitas No. 3\, 5\, and 6 (Clavier-Übung I)\, Italian Concerto\, French Overture\, and Four Duets (Clavier-Übungen II & III)\, and Goldberg Variations (Clavier-Übung IV). \nThe Clavier-Übung Project is an ambitious project: “This project is not just about playing Bach’s music to an audience. I also want to connect this music with younger generations through teaching and I want to make a connection between Bach and contemporary era by asking to composers to think about new languages inspired by his music.”
