Accomplished Jazz artist with immensely versatile musical background, A former pop singer, lyricist, composer, music arranger, actor and a celebrated TV-host in Japan. After a 25-year run amassing 45 hit singles, 18 albums, numerous Japanese Gold Disc awards, Best Male Pop Artist in 1988 and an FNS Pop Music Award for Best song in 1989, Senri Oe, In 2008, at 47 years old, left Japan and moved to New York to pursue a career in Jazz and study under Aaron Goldberg, Junior Mance and Toru Dodo. In May 2012, Oe graduated from The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music at the age of 52.
Oe was the regular pianist for Morning Musuko, a 17-piece big band specializing in Japanese popular music (J-pop) committed in cross-cultural communications and understanding between Japan and the rest of the world through their own interpretation of J-pop. Morning Musuko appeared in PhilaMOCA, the Washington DC Cherry Blossom Festival, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden Cherry Blossom Festival, and Japan Day at Central Park.
With his own group, Oe appeared in well-known jazz venues in both In Japan and New York City including Blue Note Tokyo, Nagoya, and Osaka, Motion Blue Yokohama, Sweet Basil Tokyo, NB Lounge at the Lombardy Hotel, The Bitter End, Bowery Ballroom, Gershwin Hotel, Tenri Cultural Institute, and Dixon Place. He was featured monthly on the regular roster at Tomi Jazz New York.
In 2012, Senri Oe established a record label called “PND Records and Music Publishing” and released his International debut all-jazz album, “Boys Mature Slow.” The album generated rave reviews from the music magazines including “Jazziz” and “Down Beat” in NYC. Its Japanese release later that year in September 2012, received “Album of the Year: New Star (Nissan Presents “Jazz Japan” Awards 2012.)
His sophomore jazz release “Spooky Hotel” (Village Music) went to the top of the Billboard Japan Jazz charts and he performed at Tokyo Jazz Festival 2013 with his big band from NYC and his jazz idol and future collaborator, Sheila Jordan. Oe’s third jazz album “Collective Scribble” featuring his trio, was released on Valentine’s Day (February 14) 2015 in the US and Canada. He also remained busy by producing albums for other talented artists in the NYC-area.
In 2016, Oe completed his fourth jazz album ”Answer July” with Sheila Jordan, Jon Hendricks and Lauren Kinhan (New York Voices,) Theo Bleckmann and Becca Stevens. It was released on July 5, 2016 world-wide. A world premier concert took place at The Jazz Gallery on the day of its release with Sheila Jordan, Lauren Kinhan and Sachal Vasandani.
